Sure wish my brother Dan, or anybody for that matter, would post a pic or two of the broken frame he is talking about

.. I have heard of this malady many times but have yet to actually see one. Can you see it by looking under the scoot Dan O' or do ya gotta rip,, I say,, rip er apart in order to see it?

Hey @litteacher , did you happen to check for the tranny stamp :fingers-crossed-emo that its there!!

Puc mine can't be seen at all til you put the weight of the bike on it. I rode it home with it kissing the rear tire at every little bump in the road. I have it apart and you can't see the break.

Rats, was hoping there may be an easy way for Lit to take a peek... Sounds like he will know right away if he takes it for a ride? Any idea if we are talking about the same general area as,, I think it was @Venturous Randy dealt with not long ago (seems like he took one all apart and had it welded up)? Is there a "common" breakage weak spot on our early frames or was this just something with the MK1's?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Lit - just trying to help out a little...

I think it was just the MK1s Puc Randy did have a good thread on it. That ride had some pucker power when I knew what was going on and was about 50 miles from home. Every time it kissed that tire........I was just waiting for it to explode under me!! Haul it home???? Got to be kidding!! Maybe all the UMP those early motors had?? I still got that sweet running thing (with a strong 2nd gear) waiting.

Puc, your wish is my command. This is about nine years ago and the fix I did has worked perfect and I suspect stronger than what Yamaha did when they did their fix.

I have looked at that a bunch of times Randy and mine never did come apart like that. It just sat down on the tire. There are some cracks. I goofed and took the thing apart thinking I knew what I was looking for and when weight is off of it it goes back togather til you can't see a serious break!! Bout drove me nuts looking at it. One of these days I'm going to just go over it and weld all cracks and add braces like you did. Another good one sitting and waiting.

litteacher this is in no way trying to scare you away from this Scoot. 2nd gear is going to go (maybe) it does on most. The frame on some not sure how many had this happen but not all. But there are fixes!! WE can help. And once you ride this thing we got ya!! They are a great scoot. I have a 85 with 2nd going out at 22k. I had a 83 that it lasted til 77k. And I have a couple 83s with 2nd still going strong.

Yep, ditto and word for word on what Dan is saying.. I have worn out 5 of the 83/84's (that includes our current scoot with 300k on her). I lost 2nd gear on 3 of the 5 all before 50k. The 2 that second lasted on made it all the way well past 200k and still had second gear. I have been short shifting our current bike (named Tweeks) since she lost 2nd - over 250k with no second gear.

Concerning the frame issue, I have personally yet to experience a broken frame but, if you read what these pro's (thanks for that response Randy) have written you can take it to the bank that they are shooting square with you Lit.

I also have a 83 with a new frame replaced by Yamaha. He had everything done to this one he could but it doesn't have the mark for 2nd gear and it is still strong at 68k. He moved out of state and can't find him. Went to shop that did all his work and the *******s told me they can't release that info.

I haven't looked for the stamp yet.... From the picture that was sent to me, it looks like I have to start to dismantle the engine to see if the stamp is there? To be honest, I'm the bike is still on the trailer... I'm waiting for a buddy to come over after work. I wasn't that excited to try to wrestle the bike down a ramp by myself going backwards. :)

You're not scaring me at all, Dan... this bike was purchased on a lark. I have two other daily drivers for motorcycles, but this is my first large touring motorcycle. I am THRILLED to find this usergroup with such devoted Venture owners! I have always wanted to learn how to be more of a motorcycle mechanic, so I think this is going to be an amazing project for me.

Yep, my memory worked,, this time.. Check this out Lit, we got a super mechanic here named Dingy who answered the question perfectly with a pic - that @dingy - he is keeper!!!

That punch mark does NOT indicate a second gear repair.

See my last post in that thread:

I guess that proves that everything you read isn't necessarily true! I did the second gear fix on my bike back when I bought it and didn't note it anywhere beyond my shop's hanging mobile of failed bike parts. I guess the only way to know if the fix was completed is to ask previous owners. It's a good winter project which can be done in evenings over a week or two. Then forget all about it!
