mkflow Posted August 22, 2015 #1 Posted August 22, 2015 I have a 1983 Venture that I finally got running right thanks to all the help on here. Now I have a coolant leak. Gets hot, empties the overflow but radiator stays full. I don't get it. No cracks in hoses, doesn't run hot just won't keep fluid in the overflow. Any thoughts?
KIC Posted August 23, 2015 #2 Posted August 23, 2015 does your 83 have the bypass valve ? and if so is it set correctly ?
mkflow Posted August 23, 2015 Author #3 Posted August 23, 2015 Yep. If you're referring to the valve that is set at 2:00 position. It's just weird.Put 20 miles on it after it emptied, let cool down a little, radiator still full. Fill overflow to line, empties after it gets warmed up.
Flyinfool Posted August 23, 2015 #4 Posted August 23, 2015 Are you getting a puddle anywhere? The AF has to be going somewhere. Check to be sure it is not going into the oil. Also there is the possibility that there was some air in the system that has been getting purged out.
Condor Posted August 23, 2015 #5 Posted August 23, 2015 On the early VR's the impeller in the water pump was plastic. You may have broken vanes. They are replaced with metal. Set the drain valve to on and fire the engine up with the cap off to see if there's circulation. If there is, turn the valve back to off. If it stops you probably have a bad thermostat.... Or possibly a bad radiator cap???
mkflow Posted August 23, 2015 Author #6 Posted August 23, 2015 The AF goes all over my right leg and foot if I'm riding it. By the time I shut it off, can't tell exactly where its coming from. If it were the impeller, wouldn't it overheat?

If it were the impeller, wouldn't it overheat? Checked the coolant flow. I have flow both ways, but if this works like a car should I gave flow before it warms up in the run position? I have flow immediately in either position.
mkflow Posted August 23, 2015 Author #8 Posted August 23, 2015 Could I have hoses mixed up. There is a small one straight up from top of the tank and little bigger one just under the cap. I have the bigger one to the radiator and small one as a drain under the bike. Is that correct?
Condor Posted August 23, 2015 #9 Posted August 23, 2015 If you're getting fluid all over your right leg it may be coming from the rear bank coolant hose area. If you lift the fuel tank there's a metal tube running back alongside the frame under the right side of the tank. I bet that where the coolant is leaking from. Attached is a pic of the tube. The two tabs connect to the screws of the carb diaphragm. As you can see there are several clamps that could possibly leaking. You will need to remove the tank to get to it. PS That smaller hose goes down to the twinkie.
cowpuc Posted August 23, 2015 #10 Posted August 23, 2015 There is a small bleed hole on the underside of the water pump case that allows AF to escape in the event of a seal failure behind the impellar.. You have to look closely to see it but its there. Might wanna double check that spot for dampness..
Flyinfool Posted August 23, 2015 #11 Posted August 23, 2015 Just idling in the driveway should get it hot enough to show the leak. That way you can be sitting there ready to spot that first drip wherever its coming from.

cowpuc Posted August 23, 2015 #13 Posted August 23, 2015 That's what I was told Puc, but when I had the water pump apart that hose was plugged solid. Thats so funny you mention that Jack,, one of my 83's came to me with a sheetmetal SCREW stuck in that weep hole ..
Chaharly Posted August 23, 2015 #14 Posted August 23, 2015 I'd go to my local auto store and pick up a radiator pressure tester. Put some pressure in the system and go to town
Condor Posted August 23, 2015 #15 Posted August 23, 2015 Thats so funny you mention that Jack,, one of my 83's came to me with a sheetmetal SCREW stuck in that weep hole .. That's one way to stop the leak......
mkflow Posted August 23, 2015 Author #16 Posted August 23, 2015 I found it. Let it sit and get hot. Nothing. Took for a 10 minute ride. Nothing. Let idle another 5 minutes and shut it off and it poured out of the bottom corner of the radiator. Emptied the overflow and stopped again. Don't know why it wouldn't completely empty the rad from where its leaking. Maybe if I rode it far enough it would. Got another rad on the way. Thanks for all the input. Now I know a few things to look out for in the future.
NewbeeMC9 Posted December 14, 2015 #17 Posted December 14, 2015 Where did you get a radiator? I may have broken mine bringing it home on the trailer.
KIC Posted December 14, 2015 #18 Posted December 14, 2015 Where did you get a radiator? I may have broken mine bringing it home on the trailer. What year bike do you have ? I have two radiators off of an 84. I think they are the same for other years though ....
Prairiehammer Posted December 14, 2015 #19 Posted December 14, 2015 What year bike do you have ? I have two radiators off of an 84. I think they are the same for other years though .... Indeed the same radiator is used on all First Generation Ventures.
Prairiehammer Posted December 14, 2015 #20 Posted December 14, 2015 Where did you get a radiator? I may have broken mine bringing it home on the trailer. The only place you will find another radiator for the Venture is from a salvage yard or the various "breakers" on eBay (still salvage yards, but online). Although there are some sellers on eBay that claim to sell NEW radiators for the Venture. Generally, unless there is catastrophic damage done to a radiator, it can be repaired fairly easily and cheaply by a knowledgeable radiator shop.
NewbeeMC9 Posted December 15, 2015 #21 Posted December 15, 2015 What year bike do you have ? I have two radiators off of an 84. I think they are the same for other years though .... It's a little red 89 scooter that followed me home. The strap may have put too much tension on it. It looked like the radiator cap could still move but the hook was touching it. It leaked on the way back and there is a wet spot under where the cap is I noticed. Will look at it after the holidays.
