cowpuc Posted August 13, 2015 #1 Posted August 13, 2015 One of the kids just moved from Sac to Dixon California.. Been there about a 2 months now, called the other night to tell us their home burned .. Come to find out that the power transformer that sat on a power pole in the front yard exploded into a huge fireball.. The sky rained down with burning oil and instantly started their yard on fire .. Folks not familiar with that area might not realize how much of tender box some of those area's have been the last number of years cause of lack of rain - that dry light yellow California grass INSTANTLY became an inferno!! My daughter had to use the back door to get out of the house.. Somehow the fire found its way up to the roof, things really got nasty.. Well over 100k in damages.. Repeating my daughters words - THANKFULLY no children were playing in the area at the time:happy34:!!! And her Dad's added words after agreeing with her words - THANKFULLY it happened when folks were home from work though, can't imagine the extreme injuries and damages that could have happen had it of lasted more then a few minutes before the fire department arrived!! THANK GOD FOR OUR FIRE PERSON'S AND THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED!!!!!!!!
YamahaLarry Posted August 13, 2015 #2 Posted August 13, 2015 Wow! That's just crazy. Glad everyone escaped injury. Must admit, that is a first for me, hearing of a house fire starting from a transformer via grass.
XV1100SE Posted August 13, 2015 #4 Posted August 13, 2015 Sorry to hear about the fire. Hopefully they have a place to stay until repairs are done.
Dale124 Posted August 13, 2015 #5 Posted August 13, 2015 That's very frightening, how quickly things can turn on you. Dale
Marcarl Posted August 13, 2015 #6 Posted August 13, 2015 Ouch,,, that's like coming right out of the back yard,,, not at all expected,,,, thanksgiving for safety on this one!
mirider Posted August 13, 2015 #7 Posted August 13, 2015 Wow, that is a crazy circumstance. Glad to hear no-one injured, buildings can be replaced.
Condor Posted August 13, 2015 #9 Posted August 13, 2015 Years ago I noticed some black goo running dowbn the side of the transformer on the pole in our back yard. It was about the time of that mbtb (sp) scare. The local power company said no to worry, but were out here the next day to replace it... :-) Back in my yoot, while standing out in front of a bar, I saw lightening hit a transformer across the street and the top of the pole turned into a blue ball about 10' in diameter. It lasted for 5-6 seconds and disappeared. So did the entire top of the pole.... It amazing how much energy is stored in one of those things.
BigLenny Posted August 13, 2015 #10 Posted August 13, 2015 Thats a crazy story, Puc! Man, I'm sure glad that story ended okay. That couldve been way uglier than it was. I bet her inusrance company will go after the untility company for payment.
Sailor Posted August 13, 2015 #11 Posted August 13, 2015 I have seen one of those things explode, impressive. Sorry to hear about the fire but glad no one was hurt.
Yammer Dan Posted August 14, 2015 #13 Posted August 14, 2015 Glad no one was hurt!! Could have been a lot worse.
