Chaharly Posted August 13, 2015 #1 Posted August 13, 2015 Hey guys So My right sent vent grill finally busted out so I decided I'm going to get a piece of ABS Plastic, Fill the hole in the side panel with that and then If I can, find a real small aluminum vent to mount to the ABS. I still like to use the grills for the heat direction, especially when I'm caught out in the cold or wearing shorts. So where can I get a sheet of 1/4" or 3/8" thick abs plastic? Thanks in advance guys. By the way if I make them functional and they look good I may be willing to put some together for you guys. I wont gouge prices like some of these guys on Ebay are trying too.
M61A1MECH Posted August 13, 2015 #2 Posted August 13, 2015 Try http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-plastic-sheets/=yh3wib, they have just about everything, I have even just got them to saplle me some things when I needed small quantities of something that had a large min purchase size. For a lot of the plastics they have sample sets you can get also.
Prairiehammer Posted August 13, 2015 #3 Posted August 13, 2015 There are multiple sellers of ABS sheets on eBay. Just about anything you may want in thickness and sheet size.
Eck Posted August 13, 2015 #4 Posted August 13, 2015 I would go to a local towing company (or any auto scrap yard), and ask them if they have any scrap pieces of ABS plastic parts that they picked up off the road after an accident.. They would most likely give you a large part of a front or rear bumper and you can cut several pieces out of it to fit that vent hole. You might even find a piece pretty close to the color you want too. Watch on the side of any interstate for pieces of ABS plastic parts. I see them all the time.
Flyinfool Posted August 13, 2015 #5 Posted August 13, 2015 Look in your local yellow pages for plastics suppliers. There are several in your area. Since they often supply cut to size sheets for their commercial customers, they usually have a small showroom full of cutoffs, blems, drops etc.

Snaggletooth Posted August 14, 2015 #8 Posted August 14, 2015 Check around local grocery and retail stores. Many display racks and even the signage in the stores are ABS. I collected a nice select of thicknesses and sizes while working in shipping and receiving for a few years. Chatting up the local product reps put a lot of stuff into my hands. Most of the old racks and signage were destined to the trash when the displays were taken down. Not the fastest way to get what you want but can't argue with free. Opened up a lot of old "lets me try this" projects without a cost loss. I never minded screwing up free stuff. And a lot easier to shape curved pieces by laminating a stack of thin sheets with epoxy to build a stronger project piece.
Chaharly Posted August 14, 2015 Author #9 Posted August 14, 2015 Awesome guys. Yeah I was going to go with automotive abs because my buddies have alot of spare bumpers laying around. But I figure just a pure black sheet of abs would be the best looking. I've been shopping around for vents that would be narrow and light enough to mount on but that is another challenge
videoarizona Posted August 14, 2015 #10 Posted August 14, 2015 ((I've been shopping around for vents that would be narrow and light enough to mount on but that is another challenge)) Look on EBay for used Goldwing windshield vents. If that's what you are talking about.

dna9656 Posted August 16, 2015 #12 Posted August 16, 2015 If you're going to use plumber's black ABS glue beware of using it in large quantities, apply it in small amounts and it'll harden better and more quickly. Large amounts may never harden all the way through as the outside gets hard but then the solvents can't evaporate through the hardened outer shell.
VanRiver Posted August 17, 2015 #13 Posted August 17, 2015 I personally used a spare inside fairing piece for my ABS repairs, I got the piece from a scrap venture.....nice Flat ABS to work with plus it was provided by Mother Yamaha herself. The inside fairing piece is nice and flat, as well as has a few angles that can be useful for making bolt tab and assorted repairs. Here is a pic of the inside fairing piece I'm referring to. Also I prefer using the special purpose ABS 2 part epoxy rather then the plumbers stuff. I'm able to buy the ABS epoxy at my local Walmart up here in Canada.
