Guest wrench Posted April 3, 2008 #1 Posted April 3, 2008 I've kinda been kicking around having some "old school" striping done. Since I've taken the 'bag rails off I kinda like the look, but it "needs" something. This months issue of Baggers has pics of a Volusia project bike that has kinda what I'm leaning towards, not anything big, just a few lines here and there. I've sorted thru several pics here, but haven't found what I've got in mind. So, does anybody have anything like that on their rides. Help/ideas/input is appreciated.
Carbon_One Posted April 3, 2008 #2 Posted April 3, 2008 I'm having some striping done soon on my bike. Hopefully this week. Had to cancel one appointment due to life stuff going on here at home or it'd be done now. i'll post up some opics soon as it's done thou. In meantime goggle up pinstriping. Lots of different stuff done out there on all kinds of bikes. That's what I did to get ideas of what I liked and didn't. Larry
Color01 Posted April 3, 2008 #3 Posted April 3, 2008 I was thinking to order a set of pinstriping from them. http://www.purpleharley.com/
FJR Rider Posted April 4, 2008 #4 Posted April 4, 2008 Old school...are you thinking something like this? This is on our 06 RSV. What I really like about the pinstriping this guy did for me is you don't notice it until right up on the bike and then it's a "wow." Exactly what I asked the guy to do. The lighter color actually shows up better in the pics, it's lighter on the bike outside. Plus I had the buy do a few things I hadn't seen before on anyone else's RSV and that I had done on our 99 (pinstriping at that bike by the Scarecrow). Our 06 is the first (if somebody else has already done, I apologize in advance for saying I think I was first) I've seen where the top of the dash (behind the windscreen) is pinstriped. I also have small touches in a couple of places most folks wouldn't notice, but if entered in show would help the bike win. I'll post a couple of pix of our 99 in another post. Curt
Guest wrench Posted April 4, 2008 #5 Posted April 4, 2008 Thanks guys. Yeah I'd thought about the decal striping too. I think most stripers use 1-shot sign paint and I kinda had some concern about how it would hold up on the fairing with rock chipping/kamikazi bugs. There's a new shop here that does street/rat rods and a lot of custom paint work too. I'll probably ride by there one afternoon next week and let them look at it and get some ideas from them too.
FJR Rider Posted April 4, 2008 #6 Posted April 4, 2008 Here's some from our 99. This pinstriping was done by the Scarecrow. The 06 was pinstriped by a sign painter near Eau Claire WI.
BOO Posted April 4, 2008 #7 Posted April 4, 2008 If you go on Scarecrows site, he has a lot of examples of his work to choose from. I had a bike done by him, just kind of high lighted and was always real happy with it. He also posts a schedule of where is going to be and you can make appointments on line to have the work done. I haven't been to the site lately so I hope it's still there. I know he is still painting. Jerry
FJR Rider Posted April 4, 2008 #8 Posted April 4, 2008 I loved Scarecrow's work on our 99 and on our Bushtec Roadstar....but I really like the old school style I had done on the 06. I actually have a little bit more striping on the 06, but it cost me 1/2 as much to have the 06 done last summer as what Scarecrow charged for 99 back in 01. Biggest difference though is if you look at the 99 pix there's four colors there which is 'crow's trademark. On the 06 I only wanted two colors as I wanted the striping to be as subtle as possible. Plus this time I wanted the more angular straight line old school style compared to swooping and stars style of the 'crow. Both Scarecrow and the guy who did my 06 used one-shot sign paint. The poster was concerned about how it would hold up...the striping on our 99 was done in April 01 at about 16,000 miles....when I traded the 99 for my FJR, it was April 07 and the bike had 73,000 miles on. There were no chips in the striping, even on the lowers which took the most abuse from rocks and bugs. A testiment to Scarecrow and the quality of his work. I believe from watching the guy who did my 06, I don't expect any problems there either. Curt
