I was just checking my throttle slides and diaphragms the other day, as I have not checked them in a few years. Of course, I found a crack in one of them. I have spares, but they either are cracked, or have bad diaphragms. Is there a way to separate them to put together one good one? Am I stuck buying a new one? Where can I get one in Canada eh?

Yes, you can remove a good diaphragm from a cracked slide and install the good diaphragm onto a good slide. The diaphragm should be pinched onto the slide between the white plastic ring and the she slide lip. Warm the whole thing up to make the rubber diaphragm more pliable and gently pry the white ring off the slide, then gently ease the diaphragm from the slide. Some gentle prying with a tool may be required. Be certain the tool is not too sharp or you may tear the good diaphragm.

Install the good diaphragm onto the good slide, utilizing some lube and your thumbnail. Make sure the off center hole in the slide is at 6 0'clock when the diaphragm indexing tab is located in the recess of the carb body.

Hadn't been into set of venture carbs for a while, but a new to me 99RSV had been fuggled by a "motorcycle shop". Gas was dripping, pouring out of the carbs, couple things I found;

Turns out "mr cycle shop" wasn't the sharpest pencil, but he only charged the PO a few hundred for his carb "services"

 

after lubing with a bit of dielectric silicone grease I gently stretched the diaphragm over a spray can for a few minutes, this let me get it in the body groove and get the cover back on, rechecked with compressed air, all FOUR slides now rise as they should.

The adventure continues, pulled the float valve on that body, o-ring and float tip look good screen was clean.

Will go through all four, checking all jets, orifices, will set floats (thanks Goose).

Gonna kill me to have wait for bowl seals to arrive. Anyone got a down and dirty seal swelling trick that won't stretch it out?

I'm hoping to get this beast in shape and do a camping Lake Superior circle tour in August!
