YamahaLarry Posted August 2, 2015 #1 Posted August 2, 2015 for paint job. However, there appears to be a small bar in the slots of the nut and jamb nut that I would think needs to be removed. Do I have to loosen forks to perform this task? I have read where others simply adjust and no mentions of anY disassembly other than splitting faring.
ragtop69gs Posted August 2, 2015 #2 Posted August 2, 2015 (edited) To do it by the book you need to pull the inner and outer fairing, handle bars and top clamp to get to the nuts to adjust the neck bearings. A special tool is needed to properly set the torque. YES you need to remove the tanged washer that locks the two nuts together, set torque then replace. Edited August 2, 2015 by ragtop69gs
YamahaLarry Posted August 2, 2015 Author #3 Posted August 2, 2015 Thanks. Was hoping for an easier way, but at least I'm almost there. Inner and outer faring are not on bike. Just a bunch of wires.
vzuden Posted August 3, 2015 #4 Posted August 3, 2015 If you have it torn down that far you may want to consider going the rest of the way to the bearings to clean and repack them with new grease
aharbi Posted August 3, 2015 #5 Posted August 3, 2015 If you have it torn down that far and they need greased, just replace with new ones. Note the miles and check them again based on what you find out. If they still look good extend the mileage if not check sooner.

Bearings looked good and function smoothly, still had grease, although black.

To use it properly it should be put on the torque wrench at 90° to the torque wrench handle.
