garyS-NJ Posted July 28, 2015 #1 Posted July 28, 2015 tried fixing mine but no good. watching ebay but I can't see paying $200 when the ignitech is a little more.. anyone have a TCI or comments about the Ignitech? (I heard the advance curve programming isn't yet mature.).
garyS-NJ Posted July 28, 2015 Author #2 Posted July 28, 2015 OH, and what about a VMAX TCI? will any work in my '84 XVZ12?
Snaggletooth Posted July 28, 2015 #3 Posted July 28, 2015 I bought and installed the Ingitech TCI upgrade from Dingy over a year ago. I had been running a repaired OEM unit and spare ones for years. When the last one started acting poorly I jumped on Dingys set up. Pretty much plug and play thankfully because I ended up doing the upgrade in a limerock parking lot miles from home base. Dingy had the unit already programed for my '84 so no issues with playing with programming. Just fired it up and took off down the road. Runs much better and starts at the touch of the button. I may have lost a couple miles per gallon but I'm still at well above 40 MPG and pulling a trailer most the time. Still haven't played with any programing on the new unit. It was good to go from the start. Never a miss or a sputter no matter if I'm putting around for teasing a crotch rocket. So I'm happy with it.
dna9656 Posted July 30, 2015 #5 Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) What's the FULL model number on your bike? I have a XVZ12DKC2 (83.5) on which I have replaced the TCI (with Dingy's) Ignitec that works like a CHAMP! My M/N is the only M/N in the 84 catalog....TMK (to my knowledge). garyS-NJ Posted July 30, 2015 Author #6 Posted July 30, 2015 XVZ12TDK 1984 venture Royale.. what do you mean by M/N. And I was hoping I wouldn't need to go with the ignitek due to cost. believe it or not my venture is one of four ponies in the stable and was supposed to be a low dollar test ride for keep or flip.
Vonwolf Posted July 30, 2015 #7 Posted July 30, 2015 I've been watching eBay for a while, in 2010 when I first started checking into them they were around $50 to $100. I let my bike sit till recently and am back looking and it appears they found gold in them as they are all well over $200, I just bought one for $132 off EBay, but it turned out to be bricked. I had to go thru EBay to get a %50 refund, the vendor tried to give me the no refunds on electronics bit. I accepted the %50 offer because I had some luck repairing the original unit and curiosity got the better of me, the EBay TCI look great on the outside, much better than mine but it was a mess inside. I've ordered the diodes that always go bad and resistors and capacitors that I can see are shot, but I don't hold out much hope for it. All this and I'm not even convinced the TCI is the problem. The only thing I'd say is if you buy a used unit get it from a trusted seller, they can look great on the outside when in fact it's near death or save up for an Ignitech you know is going to work
dna9656 Posted July 30, 2015 #8 Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) M/N = MODEL NUMBER; VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). You may see Seriela Number expressed as S/N. Ask Dingy if my (MODEL NUMBER) XVZ12DKC2 TCI will work on your bike. If he says it will I'll make you a good (IT'S "AS IS" It works!) deal ok? So far as the expense of having a motorcycle, welcome to the club. Because a part is for a motorcycle, boat, Ski-doo, 4 wheeler, etc, the price goes up (IMHO) because it's for motorcycle, boat, Ski-doo, 4 wheeler, etc. Maybe it's because they don't have the economy of scale that car/truck parts have. After all cars/trucks need FOUR tires; not TWO. so they make half as many motorcycle (M/C) tires as they do car/truck tires. Edited August 2, 2015 by dna9656

It's that ebay has become a horrible place to buy anything. Overpriced, lots of scams and if they don't get you on the price they overprice on the shipping charges. Just not the place it used to be when it started out. It's been infested by greed. I try to use it as little as possible, but unfortunately, it's often the only place you can find that rare part you need....

Prairiehammer Posted July 31, 2015 #11 Posted July 31, 2015 XVZ12TDK 1984 venture Royale. Gary, "XVZ12TDK" and "1984 Venture Royale" are contradictory. Model XVZ12TDK would describe a 1983 Royale. A 1984 Royale would be model XVZ12DL. The one sure method of determining your bike's model year (and model) is via the VIN. I have looked through my database and do not find any Venture attributed to you. Perhaps you would submit your Venture's VIN and build date to me? Thank you.
garyS-NJ Posted September 2, 2015 Author #12 Posted September 2, 2015 hey Kevin, I'll check that VIN tomorrow and send you a PM. I just installed Dingy's Ignetech and she fired right up and ran pretty well. popping out intake until she was warm but even warm was still missing a little. one or both rear exhaust donuts are leaking so maybe that's a problem (all but #1 warmed up to 230F but #1 went to 260F and that's the one that's leaking most). My fan came one when she warmed but my temp gauge is no longer reading since I installed the 4 brush ebay starter. ideas on that? will be on the road when I get through the brakes.. Oh, and the clutch cylinder under the left engine cover had been leaking but I still have clutch and seems the leak stopped so I'll ride it real close to home and watch
Flyinfool Posted September 2, 2015 #13 Posted September 2, 2015 Exhaust leaks can cause popping and high temps. Most likely the non working temp gage is cuz you knocked a wire off the sender located just above the right front cylinder head. The fan switch and the temp sender are right next to each other but different parts, so either one can work fine without the other.
