I'm tring to mount this MKII trailer hitch to My 89 VR.

History:

This Trailer Hitch was initially mounted to this same 89VR a few years back.

I took it off and installed it on my 91VR.

I wrecked the 91 VR.

Now I'm tring to install it back onto the same 89VR.

The wreck did not impact any part of the trailer system.

Infact both the exhaust pipes were not touched eithor.

The rear bags and crash bar took all the rear damage.

So I removed the bolt (A) from the bottom of the rear trunk.

I then placed the trailer hitch bar and then installed the washed then the hitch.

I used the bolt (A) and slid it up into the hitch mount hole from the underside

Thru the spacer into the welded nut.

I did this so I could position the bar correctly and bolt the front mounting bolt.

The bar looks too short for it will not mount up to any surrounding bolt.

The Trailer hitch bar can side forward or backward about 3/4 of an inch.

Sliding it forward or backward still does not line up to anything.

Suggestions Please.

That is strange. Front should go behind muffler mounting bolt. Bar goes back to angle iron mount under bag. Then hitch plate slides in and has 2 tabs that mount to a set of flat hangers that are in the rear. Will fire up laptop and look at my pictures.

that mounting tab on the hitch sure looks bent in that first pic, and the direction it looks bent in would make the front hole not line up with the muffler mounting bolt.

Can you take some pics with the hitch off the bike?

I thing you spotted it. The angle iron piece is bent and pulling the hitch rearward. Just checked mine and it is not angled forward

The 2 sides are mirror image, Yes they should be symmetrical.

I do not think you would even want to try to straighten it out.

Watch ebay, there are some smart asses that try to sell hitches piecemeal. Great for you bad for them. Had one got really POed at me cuz I just bought the one piece I needed and left him with an incomplete hitch he could not sell. He listed all the parts separate so that he would get more money with his expensive shipping.

Looks like it's steel.

Just pound 'er back in to shape.

If you have the tools and ability that is.

As long as there's no "kinked" spots in the tubing sections from the initial damage, there's no worries about strength. Steel is good that way.

It is all steel, My guess is it bent right at the weld, that would be the weak spot and location of the stress riser. The tubing is .090 inch wall, that tab is .250 inch thick plate. If it is bent in the weld, welds crack easy from bending. But we can guess all we want, once we see the bend It will be easier to determine if it is safe to attempt repair.

Yup, it sure is bent.

Can you tell where exactly the bend is?

It looks like it is bent in the tubing bend that is by the side bracket. But it is hard to tell in the pics.
