Bert2006 Posted July 25, 2015 #1 Posted July 25, 2015 Once in a while i get the feel of my clutch slipping. Happens on hard accell in 2nd or 5th gear. Weird part is that if i downshift it works well and pulls without slipping. What I get is good accell then for a few seconds engine seems to rev up freely. If i let off the throttle and accell again it catches well:confused24:. Bike had 49k miles on it. Fluid in reservoir is a bit dark.
djh3 Posted July 25, 2015 #2 Posted July 25, 2015 Well easiest thing to start with is service the fluid. But I'm afraid you have the dreaded clutch slippage. But from what I read there is a somewhat easy fix if you are mechanically inclined. there is a simple spring you can replace on the OEM set up and be good as new. Or you can go in and replace some friction disks. But which ever you do you will still need to replace the spring as it is what is supposed to be holding pressure on the clutch disks. It has gotten weak and is not clamping tight. Thats my best guess. Check out the Second Gen Tech section.
Condor Posted July 26, 2015 #4 Posted July 26, 2015 Before going for the juggler and replacing the clutch you need to bleed it since the fluid looks dark. Empty the reserve, but before bleeding, take one of those twist ties you find in the grocery store and strip the cover off it, and use it to clean out the expansion hole in the base of the reserve. In the bottom of the reserve there are two openings. The one on the left, or toward the front of the bike, looks like there isn't a hole in it. There is. Take the wire twist and run it through the micro hole. There may be crystals that have blocked the opening. What happens is with the hole plugged the fluid expands when the engine heats up. With no place to go it starts to apply pressure to the slave which in turn pushes the rods again the pressure plate and it acts like you're pulling on the lever...and you're not. The clutch will slip... It gets worse as time goes on. On a 2006 bike your clutch shouldn't need to be rebuilt. Not yet anyway....

See Skydoc's fix for that. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/photopost/showproduct.php?product=62&title=second-gen-heavy-duty-clutch-spring-26amp-3b-full-disc-upgrade-kit&cat=17 Had the same issues with mine with around the same mileage as yours. Used Earl's stuff (with his detailed instructions included). Fairly straightforward installation. No more clutch slippage problems for me. Rusty

BratmanXj Posted July 29, 2015 #7 Posted July 29, 2015 Yamaha is known for weak clutch diaphragms (springs) that loose their clamping power with age. I've done both a Barnett pressure plate swap on a built Road Star Warrior 1700cc as well as Skydocks Heavy Duty diaphragm & similar EBC diaphragms. It's easy to do the work on the side-stand with simple hand tools with out loosing any oil.
