I have had the carbtune for a few months, but was hesitant to do this on my own, without some help. The help was in a post by Freebird. I followed it to the "T" and hopefully everything is ok. I won't be able to Ride until Sunday.

1 and 2 were a little off, so I got them pretty close. 3 and 4 were just about perfect, but the difference between the 1,2 and 3,4 was quite a bit off. I got them pretty close.

It had never been done before, I could tell because the hoses were difficult to take off the carbs.

Unless you follow the instructions in the shop maual. That makes it much more of a challenge.

 

HAHA I did that and boy did I get backfiring. :sign20:

According to the carbtune website, this tool can be used on fuel injected bikes too. Just wondering if any of you has done this? A couple of buddies of mine have HD Electra Glides (it's sad I know, but I still let them ride with me) and I was going to experiment on them. Any info would be appreciated.

Yes, I've done it but not on a Harley. A couple of years ago at our Vogel Rally, there was a guy on a BMW1200GS. He asked if I would sync his injected bike. He showed me where the port was and I did it. VERY simple. Even easier than carbs. I've never done a Harley though. I think it will depend on the type of fuel injection used.

Being a new RSTD owner, this is all new to me. I am a pro handy man but not that good a mechanic so help me out here. I ordered a set of Baron 4-2-4s and K&N filters. I went yesterday to ask 2 different dealers what and how much to re tune or re jet the carbs after I install the stuff. One said one hour labor plus parts, the other said 1 hour per carb and quoted me 347.00 to rejet, adding that I HAVE to rejet even if it were just the K&Ns. :scared:

Reading posts from here and another forum, it sounds like most folks here just re balance the carbs and there is no need to rejet. Who should I believe? should I just order a carbtune pro and do it myself or take it to a dealer and get raked over the coals?

I'm no mechanic, but I'm thinking that it might work on the earlier Harley twin runner Marelli FI ( I have never heard of it tho), but not the newer Y runner Delphi FI system (2002 and later) ...just a guess tho. On the Delphi system the intake runner (throttle body) 'shares' fuel-air mix between the two sides, so I'm thinking that a sync would not do anything, or be necessary...but like I said, I'm no mechanic.

One nor question. Where is the thread on doing the D cutout on the air cleaner? I figure I need to do this first before the carb work. will this void my warranty?

Hold tight Reshired, most here have not had any carb re-jetting done when they added K&N or aftermarket pipes and the bikes run fine. The twin air filters offer plenty of air for the carbs and cutting on the airbox could sure void your warranty if they want to push the issue since it is a "NEW" bike.

Just ordered the carbtune. Ill post again when I get it all done and give my review. Sounds like it is an tool I need anyways and thanks to freebird for the info thread iI will use to sync my carbs.

One more Q

I see they have another tool that has see threw plugs to tune by the color of the fire in the motor. http://www.carbtune.com/colortune.html

Does this tool do the same job as carbtune?

No, the colortune allows you to adjust the pilot jets for the right Fuel/Air mixture.

 

The Carbtune lets you adjust each carb so they are each drawing the same amount of air through them.

Reshired, it's been stated in the forum before, but I'll throw my $.02 in. I've done both the K&N filters and added slip on mufflers (Bub), bike is running fine. Both manufacturers state that re-jetting is not needed. Also, I asked a bike mechanic I trust and he said the same thing. He did say, however, if you change the whole exhaust system, to something then you may have to re-jet the carbs.

By the way after a little looking around, the colortune set we need for our V4's needs a 12MM plug. Most that are out there come with a 14mm plug. I have not seen any threads on how to do the colortune with our bikes in the library. I did see one on the web below but it left me wondering how to do the adjustments on our bike.
