Top Box amber lens?

Recommended Posts

Almost all the MKII top boxes I've seen have an all red reflector on them. But every now and then I run across a pic with amber end lenses. Like so:

Anyone know if this is an aftermarket thing or is it OEM?

I wouldn't mind getting a set if they are available and making them functional turn signals to augment the lower signals....

This was an aftermarket item offer but discontinued for a while now by Big Bike Parts out of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. You can still get the lenses as of a few years ago and you see one pop up on ebay now and then. They are extra turn signals for the yellow lense and you had the option of making the red lense either a brake light or running light but to be honest they didnt put out a lot of light as they were only 4 194 bulbs in there. I ended up stripping those out of mine and adding red LEDs and a flash unit so now people can tell I am stopping even in broad daylight.

Hope that helps.

Yes, mine has the turn and brake/running lights (separate bulbs). I have some red LEDs to put in, sooo...

How hard is it to get behind the lens?

Mine are bolted to the trunk and also fastened with double back trim tape. Of course I also have to take the guard rail off the trunk to get it off.

How hard will it be to get the lens off without breaking something?

The lenses on the aftermarket item are held in with glue. I just slowly worked my loose with a small screwdriver and slowly pulling on the lens. They are just glued in and are meant to be removed for bulb replacement. Then I just cleaned out the old glue and used RTV to secure the lens back in.

That's what I'm thinking of doing.

I can make it, but it sure would be simpler to just buy it...

Here you go GW:

These parts are cheap enough that is is unlikely you can make them for less.

Thanks! I went to their site but couldn't find those so I thought they were just discontinued.

Looks like shipping is going to cost twice as much as the lenses though and exchange is brutal right now....:(

GW, Go back to the site and put in the item number (first number in description) in the search area...top left on main page. I found all three doing that and they were so cheap, I bought one of each for backup. Although I think I will install some LEDs in there for run/break and turn at some point. I already have the "YAMAHA" red band lit up under the trunk...

Even with the exchange, they should be cheap enough...as they were around $26 US total with shipping for me.

I want the amber lenses, but I'm having a bit of trouble selling myself on the cost.

$18.95 + the site quote of $30 UPS shipping = 48.95 USD.

Toss on that our dollar is only about .75 and it jumps to 61.85 CAD

Then the "hidden" charge will be the ups shipping charging brokerage, which should be 19.95 USD or 24.93 CAD.

Then ups charges you a $5 COD fee to collect the brokerage fees (the b@st@rds don't allow you to pay until they deliver so you're stuck with it) which is another 6.25 CAD.

So : $61.85+$24.93+$6.25= 92.73 CAD

And that's assuming they don't ding you with extra taxes and duties at the border. UPS will pay those to import the item, but will charge you when it shows up at your door.

That's a lot of cash to just get a couple tiny pieces of amber plastic.

It's the the shipping companies that kills us north of the border...:(

Just for giggles I called them up today to see if there was any way to talk them into doing another production run. They said the they have disposed of the molds to make these back in 2007. The lenses that they have in stock are just leftovers from 2007. When they are gone there will never be more.

I decided to buy a set of these lenses tonight and was charged a total of US$26.80 shipped. There is an extra CA$17 shipping charge to get them across the border though. See an explanation of my options below. Still brutal but not deadly. In case you did not know, motorcycle parts come into Canada duty free but there is no getting around the sales tax or the exchange rate. :mo money:

I have two shipping options for getting stuff from the US. One is a company in Blaine WA that will act as a proxy address where I can have things shipped and then pick it up for about $5. The other option is a shipping company that has an address in the US and will ship in bond to Victoria BC for $17. The second option is the one I use the most because, even though the initial cost is higher it still works out much cheaper than a trip to the States.

Perhaps there is a company in your area that will do the same for you. Would be worth looking into.

Unfortunately, nothing like that close to ns. Border isn't like bc where its close, bay of Fundy messes that up.

While I would like to have the lenses, I think I'm just going to have to give it a pass and settle with just a red running/stop light on the trunk.

Yes, the Strait of Georgia does the same for me for the $5 pickup in Blaine WA. It works fine for the guys who live in the Vancouver area but ferry fares are $45 one way for a motorcycle and passenger so the courier option at $17 is the one I use. Anyway, in case you have not thought of it and there is an international airport near you, check the smaller courier services to see if they make regular runs to the US border. Seawings Express operates out of Victora airport and makes regular runs to Blaine.

If you have the rear stop/run light on the trunk then LED lights can be installed under it to turn it into a stop/run/signal light bar. It will be all red which is not my preference but is not much of an issue.

Pretty much how I think I'll end up going. Brake and running lights.

BJ, if you are patient, the full Big Bike Parts trunk light can be found occasionally on eBay. I had the BBP trunk light on my 1990 but the 1991 did not have it, so I kept an eye on eBay, and just a couple months ago, I discovered a complete unbroken BBP trunk light for $22US with free shipping! (GLOAT!).

I have yet to install the Big Bike Parts trunk light on the 1991, partly because the thicker BBP light may not fit on mine, as I have the accessory VentureLine Tour Box Trim Rail, ABA-26HCD-19-00 and the clearance between that rail and the BBP light lens may be too small.

But I did add this LED light as a high mounted brake light and mounted it to the trunk luggage rack. It really makes a difference.

thanks, i'll keep an eye out.

Meanwhile, a very generous forum member has offer to pic up a set of the lenses and usps them to me.

BBP is only 30 minutes from my house. I think I will have to run up there and get a new set of lenses in case I mess mine up when I change to LED strips inside. They also have some cool looking star washers and rubber bumpers for the trim rail mounts.

It may take a whole afternoon if they got a lot of cool bike stuff to look at.
