How come that thing aint got asold sign on it. I would maybe drain old gas, fill her up with some fresh and 6oz or so maybe a bit more of seafoam or berrymans b12 and ride a tank through and see if it dont run better. then a carb sync and prob be pretty dang good.

As has been mentioned some things will need addresses weather itwas a 89 or 2009. Tires, hyd fluids flush and fill and maybe a set of plugs and oil change. But heck if you can do the work your only looking at maybe $300.

Does it take special antifreeze? I know old Goldwings do?

Going to get get the 1986

My boat mech friend said Berryman B12 is better and stronger than Seafoam??

I personally tend to agree with your friend. Get yourself a can of B12 spray. Remove the air cleaner box( look in the tech section) Run the bike at just above idle and spray into every hole you can see. Also put a can of liquid B12 into the tank and run it. You may have to do this 2 or three times but it will clean it out. I have done this on an 83 and 86( just like yours and my 87 ( my favorite because mine is the Anniversary edition.) Also someone mentioned checking the idle setting. It should idle at 1000-1200 rpm. Your miss could be just a fouled sparkplug.

The symptoms you have.....wont idle without choke but runs OK at higher revs are typical of blocked idle circuits in the carbs. Can be caused by a build up of fuel gum from standing, dirt or rust dust passing the fuel filter and can strike at any time. I'm a long time Vmax and Venture owner so have some experience with this common Mikuni carb problem.

Unless the idle circuits are blocked by corrosion ( unusual), a simple "shotgun" will usually clean out the carbs without taking them off the bike. Take you a couple of hours if you haven't done it before and cost you a few dollars.

The Mikuni downdraft carbs on GenI and Gen I/ 2 Ventures are similar to the Gen I Vmax carbs so same technique applies.

There are a few tips available which may help if you decide to go ahead, just holler.

FWIW

You'll find info on Google....dial up " Vmax shotgun carbs"

I think some of you are missing the big point. He says that it idles fine if you hold the throttle and keep it at 900 to 1000 RPMs. That is where it SHOULD idle. There may not be a problem here. Just turn up the idle and try it for a while first.

But of course not until after you buy it, the rough idle from a too low idle RPM can be a talking point on the price, If you fix it in front of the guy the price will go up.

You never mentioned what the idle speed was, when it was running rough, But if you "revved it up to 1000 RPM" Then it was set to low. On the other hand the idle speed can drop if the carbs are way out of sync or it is not hitting on all 4 cylinders.

Not that I know of. When I did the valve adjustment on mine and had to service the antifreeze (second gen you have to drain to do the job) Folks here just recomended any approved for alum radiators. They did say stay away from the Dexcool I think. I just used Autozone pre mixed.

Im afraid I will have to spend 600.00 on carbs. B12 in tank and new plugs may work if I ride it

Berryman's has among other ingredients, Acetone, in it. Acetone is called the "universal solvent". it will dissolve almost anything. It may not be meant for carbs. I recommend using something else.

It will idle smooth if u hold thottle at 1000 rpm..but when u let off it just flat out dies right away

Might just be the idle speed adjustment.

That is a knob on the left side, under the side cover, between the cylinders, that is made to be turned with your fingers. If you need a screwdriver you are trying to adjust the wrong thing.

As mentioned above, some people turn the idle way to slow trying to make it sound like a Harley idling. It ain't a Harley and it does not like being treated like one.

Seafoam has Naptha and some IPA (alchol) something else. The Berrymans has worked well for me. I aint drinkin the stuff, just pouring it int the tank and running it thru. Just sayin
