YamahaLarry Posted July 8, 2015 #1 Posted July 8, 2015 I will be repainting my RSV as soon as I am done with a charity ride on 7/26 and must have it ready to roll on 8/22 for a charity ride that I am doing for a sweet little 6 year old princess that passed away last September due to childhood cancer. I became very close to her and her family during my support of them in my childhood cancer work. So close, that I was 1 of 4 pall bearers at her funeral. So, this paint job is VERY important to me, as I want the memorial for that precious girl to be special to her family. The color is Kelly Magenta Candy, the factory color for 2004 Goldwing. My primary question is coverage. To those of you that have repainted an entire RSV, will 1 quart of candy be enough? I will be using the existing colors of my bike as the base unless the darker gray is too dark, and will change that color to either pearl or gold. According to the US Paint's instructions, the candy is 2 b applied in 2 coats, with the first being 80% coverage and the 2nd being 100%. Being one that does a lot of charity work, I am pushing to try to get the paint supplied to me at no charge, or at least a big discount and stopped by a local paint shop this morning. The owner seems to think that 1 quart will be plenty. And my next question is concerning the factory pin striping. It feels as though it is a vinyl stripe under the clear coat and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to remove it? Sanding it off or will a heat gun work? To hopefully give you a feel good story to my efforts, here is a short video at the end of last year's ride for Emma. It was at the end of July and she passed away 6 weeks later. I had a special song with her. During her battles, when she was facing difficult times, I would always use the "When you wish upon a star" with the family, and would often look at the stars at think of her during my prayers for her. Emma was unable to be around people at the time of the ride, so they had her at the rear of the church so we could all ride by and wave to her and so she could see the bikes. At the end of the ride, I purposely let everyone come around me and I had the Disney When You Wish Upon a Star ready to play. Turned up the volume and started it playing as I eased down the side of the church. When I got to Emma, I just had to stop and get me one of those special Emma hugs and kisses. It was a very touching moment for me and her family. Here's the video. You may need to turn up your volume to hear us. She was a special little girl, whom I loved dearly and miss so very much.
XV1100SE Posted July 8, 2015 #2 Posted July 8, 2015 Try a strip stripper wheel. I took stripes off my Mustang. Doesn't work very well on plastic though because it will melt the plastic or take off the paint. This is an example. http://www.steckmfg.com/35400_SuperStripeStripper.html
Wrench Posted July 8, 2015 #3 Posted July 8, 2015 The stripes on my '99 are clearcoated over, so the stripper wheel probably won't work on them.
YamahaLarry Posted July 8, 2015 Author #4 Posted July 8, 2015 Mine are clearcoated over as well on ever piece. Have read some say that in areas, their's was not. I am thinking that I may have to carefully sand until I get down to the stripes, and them maybe, just maybe, I can remove them with my heat gun. I have found the factory touch up spray cans of paint online, and gonna order 1 of each of the 2 colors. My bike is a '99 as well.
