hoochster Posted July 1, 2015 #1 Posted July 1, 2015 This is for all you electronic wizards out there. I have been running speakers on my RSTD through an MP3 player for a few years now with no issues. I still have no issues with my MP3 Player. It is hard wired using two RCA jacks from the amp to a headphone jack. I recently bought a used Garmin 765T and when I tried it yesterday by plugging it into the speakers there was constant static ( I call it static, not sure if that is the correct term). As I twist the throttle the static increases. Any ideas or how to correct that? I would like to be able to use it for music when I need my GPS so I don't have to use my bluetooth helmet comms set when I use the GPS.
BratmanXj Posted July 1, 2015 #2 Posted July 1, 2015 You'd need to put a Ground Loop Isolator on the audio side... http://www.amazon.com/PAC-SNI-1-3-5-3-5-mm-Isolator/dp/B001EAQTRI I think there is a filter you can put on the 12v side, but I don't know of a model or what to search for off the top of my head.
videoarizona Posted July 1, 2015 #3 Posted July 1, 2015 Yep....a filter on the 12volt line feeding the GPS should take care of the ignition noise.
djh3 Posted July 2, 2015 #4 Posted July 2, 2015 So I have to take a poke here. If your running it via rca jacks you must have an aftermarket amp your using. I have a 765t and use a y cable thru the aux port. Only time I get bad whine is if I got the IC turned up. I dont know why, but the intercom turned up I get a whine thru speakers.
hoochster Posted July 2, 2015 Author #5 Posted July 2, 2015 @BratmanXj Well at least I know what to look for. I don't like the version that I have to put to the GPS because then I would have that item just hanging out all over the place from my GPS. I guess I will have to look into one that connects to the battery side so it can be hidden and I don't have to worry about it scratching the pain or anything hanging out. @videoarizona sounds like you are saying there is a device I put right inline with the poser cable from the amp to the battery. That just seems like a better option. @djh3 you are correct it is an aftermarket amp. I have an RSTD so I don't have the fairing with the stereo. If anyone knows a good product for this please share.
djh3 Posted July 2, 2015 #6 Posted July 2, 2015 Ah dough. I guess I didnt read TD. I would say its probably ignition noise on power side. something like this on the power side of amp. http://www.sears.com/pyramid-10-amp-in-line-noise-suppressor-ns10/p-SPM12430401919?hlSellerId=10144772&sid=IDx20110310x00001i&kpid=SPM12430401919&kispla=SPM12430401919&mktRedirect=y
djh3 Posted July 2, 2015 #8 Posted July 2, 2015 I had to install a couple on some of my yesteryear cars. Back when you would get alternator whine, or could still run solid core spark plug wires on high performance cars.
videoarizona Posted July 2, 2015 #9 Posted July 2, 2015 Yep. Brian....most of the time ignition noise making it into the audio circuits is from: noise on the power line (amp doesn't have very good circuits to filter it out), poor grounds, unshielded speaker amp circuit, etc.. The power and charging circuits of a bike is rudimentary...without much shielding as well....so audio noise on the 12 volt lines is a given. You will get rid of most of it with a good filter...but I would expect some left over. On both of my Ventures, there are at least two filters in the circuits and I still hear ignition noise on the intercom at certain volume. No biggie. Good luck! david
hoochster Posted July 3, 2015 Author #10 Posted July 3, 2015 Well I ordered the piece today. Hopefully it is easy to install. @djh3 thank for the link! I will update later. If anyone can tell me how to actually put it on that would be cool.
djh3 Posted July 3, 2015 #11 Posted July 3, 2015 Should have instructions. But the one in the pic black-good ground, blue is power to radio/amp and the red from the gizmo goes to power wire of unit. Now the one you get may have different color scheme, but same idea. I installed on on a power amp converter thing I installed on mine for the GPS/aux input. I used a Boostaroo and made a power converter so the 3.5v unit would work off 12v.
hoochster Posted July 14, 2015 Author #12 Posted July 14, 2015 Got the unit in. I installed it and guess what, no more NOISE!! Thanks for the info all. You all always know what is up!! I didn't connect the ground because I couldn't really find a place to ground it and it still worked. Thanks again!
djh3 Posted July 14, 2015 #13 Posted July 14, 2015 Where have you got it installed? Then maybe we can point you in a direction to ground.
hoochster Posted July 14, 2015 Author #14 Posted July 14, 2015 I installed it under the seat because that is where the amp is located. It is behind the battery leaning against the frame (the amp that is).
djh3 Posted July 14, 2015 #15 Posted July 14, 2015 Heck just run you a wire over to the battery to ground it.
hoochster Posted July 16, 2015 Author #16 Posted July 16, 2015 To the negative post? One wire of the suppressor is already connected to the positive of the battery. If that is the case that will be easy!! I never realized that is considered a ground (if that is the case).
djh3 Posted July 16, 2015 #17 Posted July 16, 2015 Pretty sure Should have had power wire into unit, a power out and the other wire (probably black) has a ring on it maybe. Should ground out. No instructions with part? Whats it look like?
hoochster Posted August 17, 2015 Author #18 Posted August 17, 2015 Sorry for not responding sooner but I was moving and it was a pain!! Anyways, I was finally able to get back to this and took some pics. I hooked the negative up to the negative side of my battery. This is where it is sitting as of now. The negative wire on the suppressor have a ring on it but it was to small to fit the screw through so I just tighten the screw down on the post. I'm hoping that works. On a separate note, You can see the amp in the pics I took. With the amp in that spot the front of the seat actually sits up from the tank. I tried to slide the amp further down but was unable to. The plastic behind it that help separate the fender from the area didn't have much give. Any suggestions for a different place for the amplifier?? There doesn't seem to be much room on the RSTD to put things.
