CMCOFFEY Posted June 30, 2015 #1 Posted June 30, 2015 Starter sounds like a mini gun, bike does not even try to fire. Phillips 66 exit 23 on I-40 if anyone is near by. Text 405-208-1370.
CMCOFFEY Posted June 30, 2015 Author #2 Posted June 30, 2015 On closer inspection the fast clicking sounds like it is coming from behind the battery. Any ideas?
djh3 Posted June 30, 2015 #3 Posted June 30, 2015 Battery area could be fuel pump. But if its clicking, I would think its working. But I gues maybe vapor locked. Open cap and listen for a "hiss" If it does then the vent is not working.
CMCOFFEY Posted July 1, 2015 Author #4 Posted July 1, 2015 The sound is from the little black relay box that the positive battery cable goes to. It has two 30 amp fuses on the side. About to dig in more and see if the fuses are okay.
cowpuc Posted July 1, 2015 #5 Posted July 1, 2015 Never worked on a 2nd Gen Coff but it sounds like it may be a starter relay to me. Anyway to run a wire from the pos of the battery to the starter cable, just touch it to the starter cable and see if you can get it started that way? Or get a couple of those Texan's to give ya a push start and dont shut it off till ya get to somewhere where you can work on it?
etcswjoe Posted July 1, 2015 #7 Posted July 1, 2015 If it is the relay you still may be able to push start the bike.
cowpuc Posted July 1, 2015 #9 Posted July 1, 2015 Wish I was cause I would there and fix it with ya!!!
Flyinfool Posted July 1, 2015 #10 Posted July 1, 2015 That first box that the battery cable goes to is the starter solenoid and main fuse. If the main fuse was bad nothing that comes on with the key would work on the bike. Fast clicking of the solenoid is usually a low power from the battery condition. I am assuming you do not have a volt meter or other electrical stuff handy. When you try to crank the bike if the headlight goes out completely you may have a weak/dead battery. If the headlight stays bright while trying to crank then you have a bad connection. The head light should dim but not go out while cranking. These 2 tests may not be valid with a HID or LED headlight. Check the battery terminals to be sure they are clean. Using 2 screwdrivers, or a pair of pliers or what ever you have handy try to jump the two big wire connections on the solenoid. Be ready for sparks, Be very careful to not make a short to ground.
Squidley Posted July 1, 2015 #11 Posted July 1, 2015 Just got a text from Chris, said he got it push started, more to come.
Flyinfool Posted July 1, 2015 #12 Posted July 1, 2015 I sure hope that since we have not heard from him for an hour and he is not answering his phone that he has it running and is headed down the road.
Squidley Posted July 1, 2015 #13 Posted July 1, 2015 I sent a text to him at 7:39 our time and 10 minutes later he texted back and said "Bike is push started" So I'll assume that since he hasn't answered my return text that he's rolling.
cowpuc Posted July 1, 2015 #14 Posted July 1, 2015 If I was that rascal I would head to Squidley and Lonna's, stop and buy a bunch of fried chicken and some non-faygo rock n rye (cause they dont sell faygo in texas) and then go pet the puppies, fix the bike and have a camp fire to roast marshin mellows with my friends.. GLAD YOU GOT HER GOING COFF EVEN IF ITS TEMPORARY!!! Hopefully its not a battery (or worse, stator) issue that leaves him stranded even worse Jeff made a really really good point!!!
BigLenny Posted July 1, 2015 #15 Posted July 1, 2015 He needs to check for corrosion on the battery cables. When my bike died back a few months ago and started doing what he said his was doing, I had my son come and get me and we trailered the bike home. One day after I got it home I disconnected the battery cables from the battery and there was corrosion underneath that i couldn't see. I cleaned the posts and the cables and the thing has started and run like a champ ever since.
CMCOFFEY Posted July 1, 2015 Author #16 Posted July 1, 2015 I got the bike across the street from Sharp's Motorsports. That hotel did not have any room, so I am about 1/2 mile away. Shop opens @ 0900 tomorrow. I'll replace the starter solenoid and batter, or what ever else they tell me.
Yammer Dan Posted July 1, 2015 #17 Posted July 1, 2015 Clean all them connections!! Ben embarrassed more than once by a dirty connection!!!
CMCOFFEY Posted July 1, 2015 Author #18 Posted July 1, 2015 Cowpuc, you have to stop by Sharps Motorsports the next time you are in Amarillo. They have a museum of bikes in here. Old Indians, BSA, 1961 Sportster.
CMCOFFEY Posted July 1, 2015 Author #19 Posted July 1, 2015 Dead battery is the verdict. Charging system is good. 4+ years is good out of on battery. As cheap as they are, they are on a 24month rotation from now on.
BlueSky Posted July 1, 2015 #20 Posted July 1, 2015 Glad it was as simple as a battery! Congrats on getting back on the road!

CMCOFFEY Posted July 1, 2015 Author #22 Posted July 1, 2015 I am sitting next to a Suzuki RE5. I did not even know they made Rotary engine bikes. Now I need one.
cowpuc Posted July 1, 2015 #23 Posted July 1, 2015 OUTSTANDING COFF - GLAD TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS THAT IT WAS JUST THE BATTERY!!:clap2::dancefool: Indeed, I would LOVE to see the "museum" there in Armidillo - sounds AWESOME!! Those Suzy Rotaries were only made a couple years - wayyyyyyyyy cool scoots for certain. Suzuki had a habit of coming out with some pretty neat stuff back than - really really neat stuff that got kinda pricey. That rotary was very well made, problem now adays is finding parts for em and, even more difficult is finding folks who know what to do with repairing/tuning em.. I didnt check but I am sure there are "clubs" now that focus on that bike.. How do you like the "dash"? Interesting aint it!! Buddy, wish I was there to share some time gawking at it.. You and I could spend hours and hours just petting that super cool wankle motored puppy!! Anyway, glad your safe and the bike is up and going! Ride safe and the Lord be with you Son-shine!!
cowpuc Posted July 1, 2015 #24 Posted July 1, 2015 Oh, by the way,, still gotta play by the rules even though your traveling... :photographing::photographing::photographing::photographing::photographing::big-grin-emoticon:
