My speedometer on the '84 std quit yesterday. The odometer still works, no squeals, so cable seems OK. Is there a fix for this, or is it time to look for a used one?:bang head:

Meters are plentiful on ebay. You can use a drill motor to adjust the odometer, being as it's exempt from the odometer law....it might take a while though....:smile5:

The speedometer is driven by a spinning magnet. There is no direct mechanical connection from the speedometer cable to the speedometer. There is a direct mechanical connection from the speedometer cable to the odometer.

Like utadventure says, check the speedometer for free spinning.

Some pics of the speedometer on the First Gen.

So is there a way to tell if a odometer has been toyed with to lower the indicated mileage? I think that is a requirement in the odometer law?

As always you're such an inspiration!

I don't know for certain about odometer tampering on the First Gen, but autos of the era are supposed to show a "misalignment" of the odometer digits if the digits have been forced back. I don't think spinning the odometer back via the speedometer cable will reflect that misalignment, but it would take a long time to turn back an odometer via a drill motor.
