venturesome Posted June 28, 2015 #1 Posted June 28, 2015 My speedometer on the '84 std quit yesterday. The odometer still works, no squeals, so cable seems OK. Is there a fix for this, or is it time to look for a used one?
utadventure Posted June 28, 2015 #2 Posted June 28, 2015 if the odo is still working, I would suspect that the speedo is working too, just the needle portion isn't indicating the speed.
dna9656 Posted June 29, 2015 #3 Posted June 29, 2015 Meters are plentiful on ebay. You can use a drill motor to adjust the odometer, being as it's exempt from the odometer law....it might take a while though....
Prairiehammer Posted June 29, 2015 #4 Posted June 29, 2015 The speedometer is driven by a spinning magnet. There is no direct mechanical connection from the speedometer cable to the speedometer. There is a direct mechanical connection from the speedometer cable to the odometer. Like utadventure says, check the speedometer for free spinning. Some pics of the speedometer on the First Gen.
dna9656 Posted June 29, 2015 #5 Posted June 29, 2015 So is there a way to tell if a odometer has been toyed with to lower the indicated mileage? I think that is a requirement in the odometer law? As always you're such an inspiration! The speedometer is driven by a spinning magnet. There is no direct mechanical connection from the speedometer cable to the speedometer. I don't know for certain about odometer tampering on the First Gen, but autos of the era are supposed to show a "misalignment" of the odometer digits if the digits have been forced back. I don't think spinning the odometer back via the speedometer cable will reflect that misalignment, but it would take a long time to turn back an odometer via a drill motor.
jfman Posted March 18, 2016 #7 Posted March 18, 2016 I have the exact opposite problem as the OP. I have speedo bit not odo. So I need to look ar the cable?
Flyinfool Posted March 18, 2016 #8 Posted March 18, 2016 Speedo and ODO are both driven from the same cable. If either is working then your cable is good and you have other issues in the head.
