ReinyRooster Posted June 23, 2015 #1 Posted June 23, 2015 Anyone have any comments on using RainX for the bike windshield? Use it on my cars and like how it beads the water away.....just don't know if it might have any lasting discoloring issues with the windshield material on the bike.
Eck Posted June 23, 2015 #2 Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) Edit: I would not use it on my windshield, however others may say they do............ Edited June 24, 2015 by Eck
stickhandle2 Posted June 23, 2015 #3 Posted June 23, 2015 Try some pledge it will help with the beading on the windshield. Mike
Great White Posted June 23, 2015 #4 Posted June 23, 2015 I polish mine with sealer and glaze. Seems to work for me. Cuts down on the "starbust effect" of headlights at night too.
ReinyRooster Posted June 23, 2015 Author #5 Posted June 23, 2015 Use Pledge already but although it cleans well, it doesn't really cause the water to bead off as well as I would like. Would some of these newer car spray on waxes work?
Ace Posted June 23, 2015 #6 Posted June 23, 2015 I wax my windshield all the time. Makes cleaning a breeze and the water beads nicely.
MiCarl Posted June 23, 2015 #7 Posted June 23, 2015 National Cycle makes a product called "Rain Zip" that is for the acrylic windshields. Works pretty good on my 1st gen at highway speed, but no so much below 40mph or so. I also use it on the face shield - stick my face up in the wind to blow the droplets off.
tufftom4 Posted June 24, 2015 #8 Posted June 24, 2015 i Ihave used Rain X for many years and i think the most of the people who say not to use it just say it from what they have read from other people. i have never had a windshield yellow or distort using it and i put it on weekly for years i think the people that leave the bike out in the sun a lot attribute the yellowing to the rain x when it is there negligence to leaving the bike out in the sun. i have used it on a couple of different windshields for years and had no effect but they were kept in a garage if you keep the bike outside then you get yellow without rain x.
djh3 Posted June 24, 2015 #9 Posted June 24, 2015 I use non-amonia window cleaner and detail spray wax.
Marcarl Posted June 24, 2015 #10 Posted June 24, 2015 I've used Rain Away, from No Touch. Has to go on wet, so mostly I use Mother's wax,, works good.
SundayRider Posted June 24, 2015 #11 Posted June 24, 2015 I like Liquid Glass wax. I use it on my auto windshields as well. Makes rain roll right off and bugs clean off a lot easier.
videoarizona Posted June 24, 2015 #12 Posted June 24, 2015 I use Rain-X original on my Clearviews. No issues. In fact, time to get another bottle. Throw old bottle out....have a new Clearview to take care of! david
Midicat Posted June 24, 2015 #13 Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) RainX now makes Rain‑X® Plastic Water Repellent which they say is safe for all plastics. www.rainx.com/product/plastic-water-repellent/rain-x-plastic-water-repellent/ Thomas Edited June 24, 2015 by Midicat added link
Eck Posted June 24, 2015 #14 Posted June 24, 2015 Below was copied from the rainx web site (attached below) Is Rain‑X® Original Glass Treatment safe to use on plastics, motorcycle windshields, and ATVs? No. This product is intended for automotive glass applications. https://www.rainx.com/tips-information/faqs/
garyw Posted June 24, 2015 #16 Posted June 24, 2015 I like Liquid Glass wax. I use it on my auto windshields as well. Makes rain roll right off and bugs clean off a lot easier. I have used RainX on my F4 windshield with good results but I just starting using Turtle Wax ICE which is comparable to Liquid Glass and it is the best Rain/Bug release I have ever used, car or bike. Crystal clear and no streaks.
ReinyRooster Posted June 24, 2015 Author #17 Posted June 24, 2015 Well......I would have to take notice of Eck's post from the manufacturer...follow the link and it clearly says it's not for motorcycle windshields.....I go with a wax then. Thanks for all the input guys.
cowpuc Posted June 24, 2015 #18 Posted June 24, 2015 Late bloomer here... Better late than never I spose,,,, maybe -- maybe not.. I have used just regular Rain-X for years, stuff has always worked great on my 83/84's BUT, and I gotta big but,,, I also use Plast-x to clean my shields. The shield on Tweeks (original) lost its thin protective coating many many moon ago and I keep it alive and it pretty good shape with Plast-x - usually apply Rain-x after every cleaning.. Not sure if Rain-X would affect that thin coating or not but it has never had an ill affect on just the Plexi glass underneath.. Personally I LOVE Rain-x cause when its raining hard I like to jump on the ick-spressway - run a little faster than normal = stay dry and the rain just flys off so I can see where da heck I am going!! Thinking about the whole sun beating on the shield and causing issues, never noticed anything bad from sunshine.. Maybe its cause when its perfect riding, like out across the desert, I ride a lot with my eye closed, with Tweeks on auto pilot so I probably wouldnt notice even if the Rain-x did something wrong in the ..
RedRider Posted June 24, 2015 #20 Posted June 24, 2015 I coat mine with bugs only. Generally find the Iowa bugs are the most difficult to see through. (Look over the top. Haven't been able to see through my windshield for years.) RR
videoarizona Posted June 25, 2015 #22 Posted June 25, 2015 In reading the label on the original Rain-X.....it says only use on plastics if manufacturer says it's ok. Clearview says it's ok...so I'll keep on using it... Wonder if they know about the new plastic rain-x??
ragtop69gs Posted June 25, 2015 #23 Posted June 25, 2015 Rain X causes warts on frogs !! It should only be used when riding in the desert, you don't want to harm our amphibian friends do you?
