Pay Toilets

How many of you remember?

 

Back in those days it was common to see these in various public places such as bus depots, train stations, etc. It was also common to see the walls covered with jokes and other forms of humor or drawings of various kinds. Some were quite "graphic" to say the least! To a degree it was almost worth the dime to get to read all of that "stuff". It always intrigued me to find some of the same "jokes" in different bathrooms in different parts of the country ... as if the same "author" had been there too!

 

One of my all-time fav jokes on those walls is ...

 

Here I sit, broken hearted,

Paid my dime and only farted...

 

You don't see pay toilets any more, at least not in my part of the country but go to a gas station to put air in your tire and it will cost you a dollar!! Too Funny that is! 50 years ago I had to pay a dime to pass air and now I got to pay a dollar to get air!! Irony??

LOL - Pay toilets are the norm in most of Europe....and they do not use the money to clean them as most are very rudimentary and filthy! The ones in Italy where the worst! Most spots have a deal that if you purchase something you can get a 50% credit on the cost of using their toilet.

I was in Europe in 1970 and there were no pay toilets.

A bit earlier in Nepal after asking for a toilet, in sign language, was pointed towards an outhouse which was quite clean but the "facility" was two bricks with no shovel in sight????

Across the Middle East public toilets were also free but extremely filthy. The left hand wall decorated with excrement rather than graffiti. Really gross. Learned that TP was worth gold and to never be with out a couple of rolls. The only place to get any was at expensive hotels where you needed to be well dressed to get into their public toilet. Well worth the effort. hahahahaha!!

lol ... the saying "two bricks short of a load" comes to mind...

Went into a restroom facility in Cannes France and a woman was sitting in a room taking your money and in front of us were two doors one marked one for male and one for female, however once you went through the doors it was just one big restroom for both men and women, oh well when you gotta go you gotta go.

I was part of the flower power generation when "the establishment" tried paid toilets. It was unwritten rule but known to all just go on the floor in front of the door with the sign. It didn't take long for the idea of pay toilets to die.

 

On another note we have a BBQ place that still uses an outhouse, two doors, men & women. However it's a twin hole bench with no wall once inside.

When I lived in Argentina in the 60's there were very few public toilets and they were not clean,and no TP. There was always a news stand close by and in the bigger cities you could buy TP there but mostly we learned to always have a newspaper with us. In some places there would be an attendant to sell you some TP in the restroom itself. Travel is very enlightening in many ways.

Didn't pay no attention to the hole size nor shape LOL, smell was equal across both, ya know that outdoors smell :-) I take too many pictures, can find the the one a took. That reminds me of a 10 hole "outhouse" I used once when in Calcutta, India. It was built overhanging one of the canals in the the Ganges river delta. Can't recall if this outhouse was co-ed or not. Probably not but then it was not unusual to see men peeing against a wall and women squatting in the the road. No need for fancy toilets there.
