BG Hawks Posted June 14, 2015 #1 Posted June 14, 2015 Start with the beginning. I have 2006 RSV with 22,500 miles. Last Wednesday took it in for coolant change. Picked up and road home just under 6 miles. Kept smelling coolant on the way home. Had my son's baseball game or I would have turned around and went back. I did call the dealer and spoke to Service Desk and they told me they had issues with the coolant; splashed everywhere. Told me they checked it on the dyno; all good and washed it several times. Told me to keep an eye on it and call if issues. Been rainy all week but today could ride. Went out to start it and there was a loud clank (best I could describe as I never heard it before) and then nothing. Had power as lights and radio worked. Turned key off, let set (30 seconds) and then turned on again; had power as lights and radio worked. Pushed started button and nothing but a buzz sound. Pulled seat and battery was still wet with coolant. Even the battery holder had some coolant in it as I pulled the battery. Wiped it down and put a meter on it, registered just under 12vdc (battery is less than 2 years old). Cleaned connections, checked fuses; all good installed battery and it turned right over. Checked coolant level (why not) and it was not full, it was not low either but right in the middle. I don't know if this is separate or related. My Custom Dynamics LED tail light was not working properly, was on bright all the time ( I did notice this when I picked it up at the dealer). Pulled cover off and unplugged and plugged back in and all is good. Question-Is all this related to the coolant splash or do I have a starter issue? Certainly looking for thoughts from some (many) that are smarter than me! Cancelled ride today as I did not want to get stranded away from home. Please advise!
Flyinfool Posted June 15, 2015 #2 Posted June 15, 2015 Just for giggles check the oil for coolant. I'm not sure what "difficulty" would get that much coolant everywhere. I would give it a real good hosing off to get trapped coolant out of all the nooks and crannies. Battery reading 12.0V is low, Should be 12.6V try charging it up and take it in for a free load test.
BG Hawks Posted June 15, 2015 Author #3 Posted June 15, 2015 I don't think it's a cracked head gasket if your thinking that as I know it was full when I took it in. I had just serviced the bike myself. However I will check it but start looking at the battery and the voltage. More I thought about it last night the voltage had me concerned. Thanks for your thoughts.
Yammer Dan Posted June 15, 2015 #4 Posted June 15, 2015 Connections a little dirty and coolant splash just made everything catch up at once? How did they spill that much coolant?
eusa1 Posted June 15, 2015 #5 Posted June 15, 2015 I would also be concerned about all that coolant where it does not belong, and most of all ?? is it in with the oil and causing a hydro lock!!??
V7Goose Posted June 15, 2015 #6 Posted June 15, 2015 No idea whatsoever how coolant could get all over the battery, but that alone is a bit of an indication that someone did something really wrong! Goose
BG Hawks Posted June 18, 2015 Author #7 Posted June 18, 2015 (edited) Finally got back to the dealer today. I really want to give a shout out to McGrath Powersports. Had a little conversation with Griffin their Service Director on what happened. Bike went back into day for a once over and all good. I feel a lot better about getting on it and hitting the road! They went the extra mile to make me comfortable with the service they performed! Edited June 18, 2015 by BG Hawks
