Brentbastien Posted June 13, 2015 #1 Posted June 13, 2015 Im a long time xj650 and 750 rider and just bought a 86 venture my levelingcomputer is bad and need another On ebay i found an 84 computer will that work and is 38 bucks a good deal
Freebird Posted June 13, 2015 #2 Posted June 13, 2015 You say it doesn't work but don't say what the problem is. It is common for these to need some desoldering. Take a look at this tech article. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?493-CLASS-E4-Error-Repair
Marcarl Posted June 13, 2015 #3 Posted June 13, 2015 If you're meaning the computer in the dashboard, you'll need an 85 and up I think.
MiCarl Posted June 13, 2015 #4 Posted June 13, 2015 Welcome Brent! Another xjbikes guy turns up. The "computer" that adjusts the air pressure is called the CLASS Controller. (CLASS stands for Computer Leveling something something Suspension). It only operates with the key in the "ACC" position and shuts down if you turn the motorcycle ON. I haven't heard of one being completely dead, usually they show error codes and are generally repairable.
Great White Posted June 13, 2015 #5 Posted June 13, 2015 CLASS controller part no's: 1986 - Print Board/Case Set 31M-W8591-M0-00 1984- Print Board/Case Set 31M-W8591-M0-00 source: http://www.partsfish.com/page/oem-parts-for-yamaha Assuming the listing is correct, they should interchange. I would try the solder fix listed above first though. A used replacement is just as likely to have the same fault or fall prey to it in the future....
Condor Posted June 13, 2015 #6 Posted June 13, 2015 I had to re-solder the CLASS on my '91 3 times before I got it to do what it was supposed to. So don't give up if you're not successful the first time... ARRRGGG!! Also I think the thing operates at about 3 Htz. So count to five every time you push a button....
videoarizona Posted June 13, 2015 #7 Posted June 13, 2015 All of the above are correct: My 2 cents: My 89 1st gen had a CLASS issue. Got 2 warnings. Took unit out of right side, and followed the pics and info found here on this site on how to repair. Took less than 30 minutes, to take the unit out, take it apart, re-solder the joints where the connectors were, put unit back together and re-install. Worked fine after that...and still working fine one year later. These are very early generation computers, very slow but very dependable. Age cracks the solder joints and the vacuum/pressure hoses. Cleaning the connections, re-soldering your computer and replacing hoses are usually all that is needed to keep the unit running. Try all the above and let us know if these ideas don't work. david
Brentbastien Posted June 13, 2015 Author #8 Posted June 13, 2015 Computer throws e4 code i checked its getting 12 volts. Sensor input is proper 5v and output is 1v. Factory service book says replace pc and im not real good with fine soldering Micarl we have met you through a varb clinic for xj years back then we rode north territorial if i remember correctly
Brentbastien Posted June 13, 2015 Author #9 Posted June 13, 2015 Im gonna have an electrician at work take a look at it tomarrow
MiCarl Posted June 13, 2015 #10 Posted June 13, 2015 Heck Brent, I didn't look at your location. That's been awhile ago. The connector the wire harness plugs into has pins that pass through the board and solder on the other side. Over time vibration cracks the solder (often too fine to see) and the board throws errors. Re-flow those connections and it'll probably work. They're not fine connectors, you could do them with a pretty decent size soldering gun if you needed to.
videoarizona Posted June 14, 2015 #11 Posted June 14, 2015 Yep E4 means you need to re-solder the pin connections to the main circuit board. Will take you all of 5 minutes to do that.
bill in mn Posted July 1, 2015 #12 Posted July 1, 2015 I'm having an issue with mine to. Don't get any error code just a fluttering dash ,if I press hard on the selector button it will pull up the 0 PSI but as soon as it's released back to the fluttering again. any thoughts .thanks Bill
Flyinfool Posted July 1, 2015 #13 Posted July 1, 2015 Any issue at all with the Class system I would start by resoldering the connector pins on the circuit board, that fixes so many evils.
Condor Posted July 1, 2015 #14 Posted July 1, 2015 There's a couple of plugs that will get dirty occasionally. You can clean them with an electrical spray or plug them in and take them out several times to see if that get's rid of the flutter. If it doesn't do the re-solder.
bill in mn Posted July 1, 2015 #15 Posted July 1, 2015 I got another CLASS control from my friend (He was going to add it to his standard Venture ) I got an E-1 message but then it cleared off and everything works as it should. That's good I have been running without any air assist . I'm going on a 700+ mile run this weekend so that will be nice. Thanks everyone for the help .
jasonm. Posted July 3, 2015 #16 Posted July 3, 2015 MiCarl is correct. I have had 2 Ventures with the broken solder joints. I fixed one on the road, 2500 miles from home. It's EASY...if you are patient.
