ragtop69gs Posted June 12, 2015 #1 Posted June 12, 2015 I am getting ready to check the swing arm and looking at the factory service manual it say's to remove the rear fender, is that really necessary to service the swing arm?
Ace Posted June 12, 2015 #2 Posted June 12, 2015 It hasn't been necessary for me to remove the fender whenever I've done the swingarm service.
vzuden Posted June 13, 2015 #3 Posted June 13, 2015 I've had a couple swing arms off. I can't see why the fender would interfere
Motiv Posted June 13, 2015 #4 Posted June 13, 2015 I left the fender on, no issues removing the swing arm. (As mentioned before). Good opportunity to clean and lube all the suspension linkage needle bearings and of course swing arm bearings. It is a pain to get the drive shaft back into the u - joint with the swing arm installed, I recommend inserting the shaft as you install the swing arm, moly paste on splines too. (Not meaning to offend if you already know all this.)
ragtop69gs Posted June 13, 2015 Author #5 Posted June 13, 2015 No offence taken. Others that read this thread may not know. I have wrestled with getting the shaft into the u-joint before, I found that a coat hanger thru the inspection hole aids alignment by hooking and holding the u-joint. I've never gone as far as to remove the swing arm but I will this time. At 75K miles it needs visual inspection and re-greasing. I want to be sure everything is 100% before I go to the darkside. Montana awaits me next month. I placed an order with Summit Racing for my darkside tire and windshield wiper at 7:30 Thursday evening and the wipers were at my door less than 12 hours later, the tire is already at the local UPS depot reday for delivery on monday! Totally amazing how fast their shipping is.
ragtop69gs Posted June 15, 2015 Author #6 Posted June 15, 2015 I had put off doing the swing arm service fearing it was a big involved job, turned out to not be such a big deal once the tire is removed. Glad I checked it as there was barely any grease left on the bearings. The worst part of the job was having to drive to the parts store for a 30mm / 1 3/16" socket.

I bought my socket at the flea market for $1.50, I am not cheap I am just thrifty
Guest erock1 Posted June 15, 2015 #8 Posted June 15, 2015 the only reason I could see to remove the fender is if you can't get adequate clearance (height-wise) to remove the wheel/tire assembly. Just did mine, and noticed the same instructions in my manual. If clearance is established, you're golden !!
