k9cottage Posted June 11, 2015 #1 Posted June 11, 2015 i am just putting my motor back together fitting the balance shaft the book says, align the punch mark [a]in the balancer shaft gear with the punch mark in the balancer shaft drive gear . sounds easy i have the punch mark on the balancer shaft but no punch mark on the drive gear . i do have a very worn out white dot is this the mark ?????

Did find this.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?95158-83-VR-Little-help-with-engine-rebuild&highlight=balance+shaft+marks thanks for that videoarizona i had done a bit of a search and found that one but sadly it is a not a 2nd gen but i will keep looking. it would be a pain to put it all back and have it wrong just a pick of a gen2 crank shaft would do with the pop mark on it i could count the teeth from a point on the crank shaft balance weight.

dingy Posted June 12, 2015 #8 Posted June 12, 2015 There will be no noticeable differences between an RSV & 1st gen motor relative to crank/counter balance orientation. The picture attached will show relative position of crank to balancer. Note the far rod throw on crank is at top position. Look at far balencer offset positioning. Based on these two points it should be possible to locate balancer relative to crank within a tooth or two. This will then narrow down area to look for the balancer mark. You are looking for a mark that is in the 'valley', between 2 teeth, as shown by red mark in closeup of balance shaft. I have had great difficultly as well locating marks on them. Your other option is to go to a dealer and ask them. Gary
k9cottage Posted June 13, 2015 Author #9 Posted June 13, 2015 thanks dingy have set it up identical but i still have no pop mark on the crankshaft gear i even used a magnifying glass[must have been put together on a friday] the balance shaft lines up perfect in the same position as the photo .if i had not read the manual first i would have poped my own mark on it before taking it out another thing to lock into the memory do not trust the manual .as for going to the local yam dealer chances are they have never seen one of these bikes. hopefully someone will have a close up pick of the crankshaft gear with the pop mark on it i can then use the teeth to locate the right tooth
dingy Posted June 13, 2015 #10 Posted June 13, 2015 I will try to get a picture of a balancer with a visible mark on it from a VMax friend, he should have several. He has forgotten more about these bikes than I know. I don't have an extra balancer shaft. VMax's are identical to the Ventures. Gary
k9cottage Posted June 13, 2015 Author #11 Posted June 13, 2015 thanks dingy. it it the crankshaft gear that is not marked. the balance shaft has good marks and when put in the case looks spot on with the picture i don't think a lot of ventures came to australia and i have only see 3 in tasmania which is why i don't think the yam dealer in launceston would have had much to do with them and they are 2 hour drive away [ we don't line at the end of the earth but i can see it over my back fence ]
dingy Posted June 13, 2015 #12 Posted June 13, 2015 I do have an extra crank. Few pictures attached. It is not a punch mark, it is a circle etched into crank about 1/8" in dia. Extremely hard to see. It is between 2 marks in closeup and just to right of marked tooth. Other 2 pictures are so you can see orientation of crank in regard to mark. Gary

k9cottage Posted June 13, 2015 Author #14 Posted June 13, 2015 perfect i had guessed 1 tooth out i had 14 now i know which tooth and i am not looking for a punch mark i changed the angle of the light it is as plane as the nose on your face but you can't see it while looking straight at it has to be looked at an angle .im never to old to learn new things . if you lived closer i would buy you a beer. this site well worth the 12$ thank you once again barry
