I’m planning to change my Final Gear oil, because My Midnight Venture has now almost 10.000 miles on it…. and I have a few questions...….can I leave my bike on the kick stand or does the bike needs to be level ? …and do I need to remove the saddlebag or can I change the oil this way …I do have a 2oz Syringe with a hose.

Take off the saddle bag, it is only 4 bolts, and this lets you clean everything. You can do it on the side stand. Buy good oil. Then do it about 2000 miles ago and every 8000 miles after that.

It's best to take the saddle bag off. It's easier to fill and see the oil. Use good high quality oil. I change the oil every time I put a new rear tire on. That for me is about 20,000 miles. I don't know what the manual calls for, but I have never had a problem. Never had metal in the oil and never had burnt oil.

I remove the saddle bag. I use Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic oil. I change it with every oil change. The final drive only holds 4 or 8 oz. It's not much, but I can't remember the exact amount.

The owner's manual calls for a change at 600, 16000 and every 16000 miles after. Check level every 4000 miles. Some change it more then that but I won't.

The manual calls for .21 quart.

Actually the service manual specifies having the bike upright when checking the final drive gear oil. Since you fill it to the brim, it will be low if it was filled on sidestand.

I change mine every oil change..

I suggest you take off your saddle bag for ease of access.

leaving it on the kick stand is fine.

I place a small piece of cardboard between the tire and the rear hub where the drain cap is so the oil does not run onto my tire and rim..The cardboard is like a small "ramp" or funnel for the oil to run down into the oil catch pan.

After cleaning and reinstalling the drain plug, I then fill mine "slowly" until oil begins to run out, then I insert my little finger down the threads pressing out the excess oil.

This leaves the oil level at the bottom of the thread line which is where it is supposed to be.

Install your filler cap and check tightness of both drain and filler caps, and your done!

I have always filled it up to 1/3 up the threads on the inside with the bike on the side stand.

Same here. When it comes up the threads while on the side stand.

Your syringe should work, but I just used a straw I had in the truck from Wendy's. Worked great.

I pull the bag, drop the oil and sit on the bike upright to get all the oil out.

put the bottom bolt back on.

now the tricky part.

being 6'4" I sit on the bike again BACKWARDS, facing the rear of the bike, I pour the oil in and tighten the bolt back on, they put it back on the side stand. then tighten everything down.

I change mine ever 6 thousand miles

last change was yesterday, at 18,003 miles, just dirty oil no metal, just grit

I found a pump that screws onto the top of the gear oil bottle. This allows me to drain the oil from the bottom, put the drain plug back in and then put the tube that came with the pump into the filler hole and pump until a little drools out the opening. then all I have to do is replace the filler plug, wipe everthing down and away I go.

Looks like this only I found mine at Wal Mart

wouldn't it be simpler to put a 2X4 under the side stand to set the bike upright?

:rotf: ...I was thinking the same thing.........

Good point Eck. My buddy had the dealer service his star 1100 and the drain bolt came out while on a ride. When he took it back they refused to replace his rear drive. Now his rear drive whines like a TCU co-ed asking daddy for a new BMW.
