Atoolnut Posted June 7, 2015 #1 Posted June 7, 2015 if not in right forum please move..sorry...2008 rsv 32000miles owned since new..while up on lift doing pre trip inspection while rear end is up off ground in gear and running there is a noise that sounds like a u joint noise ..louder in 1st gear and still there while in 3rd and accelerateing...is this a normal noise because there is no weight on rear wheel? I dont think so...how hard is it to replace u joint if its the culprit?any other possible causes...rear splines were last lubed about 10000 mi ago.planned trip to adirondaks next week..guess thats out if this is a big job
etcswjoe Posted June 7, 2015 #2 Posted June 7, 2015 I believe it may be normal, both of mine make noise if I run them on the jack.
Atoolnut Posted June 7, 2015 Author #3 Posted June 7, 2015 never had it running with whel in air so thats the ???.doesnt make noise not in gear...ujooints seem to be tight by looking under rubber seal..noise comes from middle gear case..
cowpuc Posted June 7, 2015 #4 Posted June 7, 2015 You are probably just hearing normal gear lash noises.. Gears gotta have a small amount of lash set in them or really bad things will happen, key is to have them set up correctly.. If they didnt have that space (lash) for movement and were to tight, even helical gear sets that should run fairly quite will howl like crazy (sign that someone didnt know what they were doing when setting up the gears).. Also keep in mind that even a couple thou of lash set up in multiple gears will equal a fair amount of play in the system and that the forward bevel gear is right out in the open where you can hear the noise of the system - just a back woods idea but may (or may not) be applicable to your question.. IMHO, if want some other opinions from some very qualified folks around here (trust me, there are some AMAZING gear heads around this joint) - you might wanna take a short video clip - post it on you tube and then post the link here so these guys can hear what your hearing.. Just a thought..
Atoolnut Posted June 7, 2015 Author #5 Posted June 7, 2015 noise seems to come while driving on road..1st gear weaving from side to side about 5-10 mph sounds like a rumbleing with a jerky feel...tried in 2 nd but couldnt feel it...going to pull drive shaft and check...what are symptoms of middle gear failing? is it output bearing or ujoints?thankz for input
Atoolnut Posted June 7, 2015 Author #6 Posted June 7, 2015 ook delving a little deeoer..pulled rear wheel and driveshaft..nothing seems worn..how loose should u joint be ?seems tobe floppy as compared to a car..cant see any needle bearing pieces
Marcarl Posted June 7, 2015 #7 Posted June 7, 2015 There should no play in the u-joint, but if you are twisting on the drive shaft then there will be some play out of the gear box. If you can get the rear wheel off the ground and run it in 2nd gear, then drag the rear brake that should take out any gear lash, so that you can better determine the issue. If the sound goes away with brake drag, it's probably gear lash.
Atoolnut Posted June 8, 2015 Author #8 Posted June 8, 2015 still working at it..pulled swingarm to look at u joint..ujoint is tight..repacked swingarm bearings while its apart..Thanks Carl for that advice will try it once its back together..couple other things to check
Atoolnut Posted June 8, 2015 Author #9 Posted June 8, 2015 update still puzzled...pulled middle gear assembly out of cases ..ujoint needle bearings all there and seem tight...middle gear assembly doesnt have any play in bearings and no wear marks on gear teeth on both pinions..next step is to pull gear box cover off to see if there is play in the remaining bearing..then im stumped ...
cowpuc Posted June 8, 2015 #10 Posted June 8, 2015 Wonder if the rear end pins need greasing and the noise is being transmitted to the driveline some how..
Atoolnut Posted June 9, 2015 Author #11 Posted June 9, 2015 pins greased last time wheel off....is it possible something loose at clutch side transmitting noise..gearbox cover off...bearing is tight no sign of metal filings.no end play in that shaft..think i will get new bearings for middle gear and new ujoint caps just to rest my mind...with no wheel on and no swingarm installed its just looking for broken\ loose pieces..thanks for input
Atoolnut Posted June 17, 2015 Author #12 Posted June 17, 2015 Update...changed rear tire...balanced...new rear wheel bearings...repacked swingarm bearings...replaced ujoint bearings...greased all splines..lubed all pivotpoints in suspension...noise gone...it will remain a mystery what was problem.....going to test this sat going to paris vintage bike show www.cvmg.ca/ParisRally
crowrod Posted June 18, 2015 #13 Posted June 18, 2015 how hard was it to replace your universal joints? can it be done with out removing the middle gear assembly, I have a new universal setting on the shelf, but have been afraid to tackle the job. If not to tuff Ill get on it!!!

If not to tuff Ill get on it!!! you need to remove the swingarm...i pounded out half of ujoint thinking i could just remove ujoint assembly nut then do other side....it would have been easier to remove middle gear assembly and do ujoint on the bench with the vise ...3 bolts middle gear comes out..the middle gear nut is staked to bolt needs a lot of torque (air gun) to get off .better on bench
