I know in technical terms it's an enricher, not a choke....

But here's my question: My choke does not stay on/engaged unless I physically keep my thumb on the lever. In other words, the moment I release pressure on the lever, the choke goes back to off.

The reason this concerns me is, I can't do anything else while the bike is warming up....here's my normal routine...start bike, zip jacket, put helmet on, put gloves on, push bike off center stand, bike in gear, ride off....let off choke at end of driveway. I can't do this because I need to keep my thumb on the choke lever until it's warm enough to idle on it's own....now to be fair this only takes about 25 seconds....but it's messing up my routine!

Is this the way Yamaha intended?

Pat, the choke lever on the 1984 is unique to that year. Unlike other years, where the choke lever is below the switch housing and moves fore and aft, the 1984 choke is coaxial with the left handle bar and moves up and down.

I don't have a 1984 and have never worked on one, so I can't offer any pertinent information about tightening up the lever, except to say that there should be a "washer" between the lever and the switch housing and also perhaps a foam washer between the choke and the grip. Perhaps you could slide the grip up tighter to the switch housing to provide more friction?

EDIT: Further research reveals a spring loaded detent ball on the choke lever assembly. Perhaps that ball is no longer free (stuck in the retracted position)? Or the spring is rusted and/or collapsed.

Check on the carb where the choke cable is secured. The metal end at the end of the black cover should fit in the cable retainer. If the end is out the choke won't stay engaged.
