Condor Posted June 2, 2015 #1 Posted June 2, 2015 So I've been thinking about getting a nook to carry along on MC trips, and went to this auction last week. They had an Apple Ipad Gen3 listed, and I ended up high bidder. After 35 years of computing, and dozens of computers this is my first Apple product. After the initial 'hand shake' and fumbling around, I really like this thing. To get it fired up I had to visit the local Apple store and pick up a new charger cable...the one supplied was toast... The battery was dead..dead..dead so it took a while to get it to 100%, but once there it holds a charge very well. I'm a happy camper...
Freebird Posted June 2, 2015 #2 Posted June 2, 2015 All Eileen ever uses is her IPAD. The loves it. I'm not a fan of anything without a real keyboard but I did end up buying a MacBook Pro a little over a year ago. Like you, I was never an Apple fan but my son went to work for Apple and convinced me to try one. I have to say that now I HATE having to use my company Dell laptop. Love the Macbook.
GAWildKat Posted June 2, 2015 #3 Posted June 2, 2015 I haven't played with Apple products since the 90's so not to bash on Apple products and their supporters, I really enjoy customizing my user experience to my needs. My laptop is fully customized to me, and my tablet and phone, same way. And yeah, I use the tablet way more than the laptop now. And my husband wants me to built myself a desktop unit for me to do online gaming...it would be so under used.....sheesh

Like you, I was never an Apple fan but my son went to work for Apple and convinced me to try one. I have to say that now I HATE having to use my company Dell laptop. Love the Macbook. This one came with a well used Bluetooth keyboard. Seems to work... take a charge at least..., but haven't tried to use it. I just bought an aluminum keyboard/cover/case combo off eBay. Hey for $10 bucks?? From what I've heard the Bluetooth boards are a little slower than a hard wire, so we'll see....?? Like Eileen I'm slowly becoming infatuated with this thing....
SilvrT Posted June 2, 2015 #5 Posted June 2, 2015 I've been tossing around the idea of getting an iPad for a while. My biggest concern is if I can connect to my work network with it using either VPN or some other software and then be able to control remotely my work PC. Anyone have first hand experience with this? Currently I connect using a program called Team Viewer which works pretty good in the Windows world.

The Tooch Posted June 2, 2015 #7 Posted June 2, 2015 Well I down loaded a Tom-tom GPS App. for $46.99 with 4 updates a year & maps for life, turned my iPad into a GPS that does not use data while traveling, to operate. Bought a Ram mount for the iPad with a combo lock so someone can't steal the iPad off the bike. ( Just when I go pay for gas or something cause I would not leave it on the bike for long.) Hooked a splitter up under the fairing and ran the iPad through the bikes aux. Got a USB charger for the Cig. lighter socket to power it, as I go down the road. I can now actually see the screen on the GPS which was getting real hard on the little screen on my old Garmin. It was just to small for my old eyes. I have iTunes to play if I want. Always have a camera with me all the time and can take it into the Hotel/ Motel for Wi-Fi when I travel. More than a few noticed the set up on my bike at MD. It is just the pussy cats rear end!
SilvrT Posted June 2, 2015 #8 Posted June 2, 2015 Bought a Ram mount for the iPad ..... I can now actually see the screen on the GPS Would you mind posting a pic of this setup?

I have used it from Linux to PC but the thing I don't quite get is how do you manipulate the keyboard and mouse on the PC end when running from an iPad?
The Tooch Posted June 3, 2015 #12 Posted June 3, 2015 Would you mind posting a pic of this setup? Hey SilvrT Never did take a picture of that set up....but I just took pictures of the bike for Ins. purposes after my spill. I got two shots that sort of show the mount at least. But there not the best and the one with the up bent bar makes it look like it sits higher than it really does.

That may be a question for Team Viewer. Just cogitating here, but maybe the Ipad app controls those functions from the touch screen???

If you rode your Venture like you parked it in the garage, it is small wonder you slipped and slid in the rain. Windshields and trunk racks don't have near the traction that a rubber tire has. Just sayin'. (That is a Soutern States saying.) How did the IPad fare in the rain and did you have chrome IPad guards protecting the IPad from the "Slip 'n Slide"?

Just talked to a coworker who's into Mac & iPads and apparently you can connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to them.
SilvrT Posted June 3, 2015 #16 Posted June 3, 2015 @Tooch I was able to right side up your bike with the help of some friends (Microsoft Picture Viewer lol) ... that's a pretty large mount for that space me thinks. I've been looking closely at the iPad mini which might be more suited for this kind of setup.
Condor Posted June 3, 2015 Author #17 Posted June 3, 2015 Just talked to a coworker who's into Mac & iPads and apparently you can connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to them. True, forgot about that.... So there ya go.

It works for me but your right the iPad mini would be nice and I already had the 2 iPads wasn't going to buy another one just for the bike. If you go to "GPS City" web site they are out of Calgary so Canadian prices and shipping they have every kind of Ram mount you can think of just type in the type of device you have in the search box, "a motorcycle mount for ????" and it will give you all the options they have. There are a couple for the mini. Interesting if you click on those thumbnail with my iPad they are right-side up? But upside down on the Windows desk top at work?? I don't know? I'm not an I.T. guy, I'm not even a computer operator guy! Edited June 3, 2015 by The Tooch
SilvrT Posted June 3, 2015 #19 Posted June 3, 2015 If you go to "GPS City" web site they are out of Calgary so Canadian prices and shipping they have every kind of Ram mount you can think of I went there and was poking around ... was also looking for a mounting for my video camera (not a GoPro). Found one but then realized I got somehow bumped over the the US site. Went the the CAN site and the one I found wasn't listed anywhere so ... ordered it from the US site. Good thing I have a shipping addy just south of me in Blaine ... free shipping! Then I went back and looked again and found it on the CAN site LOL ... but even with the exchange rate the US one is cheaper. CAN one has a shipping cost plus GST tax.
