I purchased a TomTom Rider with the Ram mounting kit, base and hard wiring. It has very little info I can find on wiring it onto the bike, only run the wire to the battery. There is no inline fuse or relay. I don't think this is a problem then. I want to wire it up to only have power when the key is turned on.

So the question is....where do I wire it to? The ignition switch? the headlight? I even read somewhere the tail light (which sound silly to me being at the opposite end of the bike) maybe the accessory plug? Please if somebody has done this give me some guidance, before I start to experiment.

I hardwired mine into a 3 way kuryakin switch master cylinder switch : here is the write up I posted on when I initially installed the switch: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?85214-Kuryakin-3-way-switch-install

So, my switch runs through a relay off the battery and runs my passing lamps, another set of lamps and the GPS. To trigger the relay, I connected to the headlamp in the fairing (used the wire that used to power my passing lamps). For the GPS, powered through the switch I used a 2 amp fuse that I added and found a ground on the frame holding the cassette deck. Everything is controlled by the relay and none is active unless the bike is running. Hope this helps!

The power outlet (cigarette lighter type socket) on the inside of the fairing is switched with the ignition. In side the fairing is a two pin connector that feeds the power outlet. I sell a "T" harness that will let you tap into that circuit, all you need to do is add two contacts to your GPS power harness and insert them into the connector I provide.

Cost is $13.00 delivered to the lower 48, add $5.00 to deliver to Canada.

I like that set up M61A1MECH. I will send you a PM so you can send one out to me. I like the clean look of this ease of install. The less cutting into the harness the better. Thanks.

nope. going with the T harness from M16A1MECH. I like the 3 way kuryakin master cylinder switch, but I want power to go off with the ignition. I would probably forget it on and drain the battery. I have nothing else to add that requires more switches as well. Thanks all !!

The T harness from M16A1MECH. Unless you don't mind splicing directly into the cigarette lighter harness is a pretty clean way to go. Either way make sure you add a second inline fuse on the GPS wire that is of the proper size for the GPS (if there is not already one on the GPS harness already). The fuse for the lighter socket itself will be too high for the lighter gauge wire supplied with the GPS.

By the way which version of the Tomtom rider did you get? I had the Rider II and loved it. Its only short coming was the ability to see the screen in bright sunlight. Apparently the latest model which a couple months ago was advertized but not yet available was to have resolved that issue.

The bluetooth on it worked great and also did a great job of linking up to my phone which I was told by those on the other end of my conversations was crystal clear.

When I installed my Garmin I tied directly into the battery with a 5 amp fuse (later converted to a fuse block stashed in the fairing to power the gps, passing lights. I didn't put mine on switched power because when the gps is on the bike I know it is being charged. I make sure I remove it when I park the bike.

To have power come on when the bike is running, read the write up on installing passing lights. The write up tells you which wire to use when the head light is on. Use a relay to control when power passes thru to the gps.

saddlebum I had to look and I think it is a 5th gen if that makes sense. It is the most current TomTom Rider out. I had no issues seeing the screen.....so far anyway. Just need to hard wire her in and I'm good to go.
