Cowboy Posted May 31, 2015 #1 Posted May 31, 2015 Need info on how to fix an oil leak at the shifter shaft as it comes out of the transmission. I have been having oil dripping for awhile now. I finally found the culprit today. Know just need to know how to go about fixing. Anyone know what it takes? Thanks ahead of time. Brian
ragtop69gs Posted May 31, 2015 #2 Posted May 31, 2015 Pull the linkage off the shift shaft, pull the middle gear cover and replace the seal . a small hooked tool like a dental pick is how I got the old seal out, slide the new seal as far into the bore as you can then slip a washer and short section of pipe over the shaft and use it to drive the seal home.
Cowboy Posted June 4, 2015 Author #3 Posted June 4, 2015 Jay, Thanks for the knowledge. I ordered the oil seal and will replace in the morning. I was not sure how to remove the oil seal but it just came right out with a pick. New one should just slide back on and tap in place. Thanks again. Brian
ragtop69gs Posted June 5, 2015 #4 Posted June 5, 2015 Don't worry too much when you put the new seal in, it will leak a little till you get the cover back on to support the outer end of the shaft.
Cowboy Posted June 8, 2015 Author #5 Posted June 8, 2015 Jay, One thing I should mention that after 109,000 miles seems that the seal is frozen. I ended up taking a slender long screw driver and hammer. Making sure not to damage the outside walls. It was a pain and after deforming the original seal I was wondering if it would ever come out. Got no damage and new seal in and no oil leaks. Thanks Brian
