rbig1 Posted May 26, 2015 #1 Posted May 26, 2015 well im going to need help figuring out my rattle in engine. I know the carbs are off need set. And have the crash bar braces that I haven't got on yet. Don't know what rattle is, could be clutch, bent rod, same accelerating and slowing down. Weird sound. Had to jack wire trailer lights to get them to work the po has the brake strobe supplying power. Converter box cant take it. Wimp. HOPE I MAKE IT. Could be a yard sale. LOL the big1 over and out
cowpuc Posted May 26, 2015 #2 Posted May 26, 2015 Does the rattle change if you go from side stand to standing upright? Does pulling the clutch in seem to quiet it? Does it sound like its coming from the waterpump?
rbig1 Posted May 26, 2015 Author #3 Posted May 26, 2015 It changes a little with clutch pull but not every time. Same in all position's no effect at all. My hearing is sad.
cowpuc Posted May 26, 2015 #4 Posted May 26, 2015 R, if it were mine I would start with the clutch.. If pulling in the clutch quiets the rattle down, even if its not everytime - IMHO, it is probably clutch related.. If it were a crank/rod issue I highly doubt that clutch activation would change it.. To help with your hearing, I wonder if listening thru a paper towel tube (with no paper left on it) would help? I used to use a stethascope a lot but, my hearing isnt what it used to be either and I have found that the good ol paper towel tube seems to have a megaphone effect.. Might try it..
rbig1 Posted May 27, 2015 Author #5 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) well put a tube up to it. Rockers are real loose. and clutch noise also. But more so rockers. Smoked the clutch real bad a while back. Changed the fluid and a few days later release moved. Think slave may have been hanging up. Is it possible to do rockers and carbs in one day. Never done rockers before have gaskets already. Also have carb boots. Don't think freebird wanted to go in that deep. Edited May 27, 2015 by rbig1
cowpuc Posted May 27, 2015 #6 Posted May 27, 2015 Hey Rbig,, what cha using for oil? I know when its warm out I switch to 20/50 in Tweeks and she tends to run a LOT less noisy and shifts better.. Of course, she has a ton of miles on her and I have no idea how many miles on your scoot but - if its over 200k you might just wanna try some 20w50..
rbig1 Posted May 27, 2015 Author #7 Posted May 27, 2015 it was doing it before I put fresh mobil 1 in it. the old oil looked like hypoid when drained lots of viscosity. only has 40,000 on it.
Flyinfool Posted May 27, 2015 #8 Posted May 27, 2015 Rockers? These bikes have no stinking rockers.... It is an overhead cam. Clutches are common at a MD. Carbs and valves are a bit much for a MD unless you can make a special arrangement with someone that can dedicate the whole weekend to your bike. With all of the help available at a MD everything can take at least twice as long to complete. But there will be a lot of ears there to help you locate the noise(s). If you are that worried about making it to MD, please post your intended route and when you expect to be where so that if you dont make it we have an idea where to send the search and rescue parties.
rbig1 Posted May 27, 2015 Author #9 Posted May 27, 2015 Rockers? These bikes have no stinking rockers.... It is an overhead cam. yep I knew that. part timers kicking in again. So that leaves chain tensioner or bearings. home project lol
rbig1 Posted May 27, 2015 Author #10 Posted May 27, 2015 I almost forgot make sure I get a good pic next to my bike. Haven't happened yet.
