tufftom4 Posted May 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2015 This morning I took my 2 kids downtown for a walk at the farmers market in my pickup and everything was great until I went home on the drive I came upon a Harley rider that was sight seeing doing 25 -30 mph that is ok so I decided to pass him and I was wrong because it was a double yellow line but what followed was wrong on his part and I came close to taking him out with my truck. When I went to pass him he sped up so I could not pass him so I slowed and went back behind him then he went 20mph and waved me to go bye and when I did he sped up again and would not let me pass then he shot me a shooting gun gesture with his hand that only reassures me of the mentality of Harley riders. If you are by your self there are a several options. If you are not, protecting your family is all that matters. The high road is always the first step. If it goes south from there, at least you gave that jackass the chance to do the right thing and you didn't teach your kids to over react to an uncomfortable situation. Stay safe my friend. On a lighter note, 20 years ago traveling to Disney World I get frustrated on I95 South with a soccer mom in the left lane holding up everyone. When I finally was able to pass this lady I leaned over far enough for her to see me give her the middle finger. I am driving a Dodge mini van. When I glance in the back of the van all three of my daughters are doing the exactly same thing. My youngest could not get her fingers to work properly and was using her other hand to hold down all but one finger. You don't want to be that guy... cowpuc Posted May 24, 2015 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2015 Hey Tom, sorry to hear that happened to you - a lot of crazy folks out there and it can certainly take the fun out of a normally pleasant day when ya happen across one.. I personally cant say that I connect that sad type of attitude to just Harley riders.. As a matter of fact, I have ridden many miles with HD owners and, aside from a few, have found em to be fun loving and good guys/gals BUT - certainly making NO excuses for what happened to you. Kinda a human thing I guess - always a few bad apples. I have even found that in dealing with human beings who happen to be carrying a badge - the kind of position that is suppose to be the best of the best at displaying decent attitudes.. Most, but not all, of the LEO's I have had encounter with are really great human beings but there have been a few occasions where it was obvious that a particular person should not be allowed to carry a badge, much less be trusted with a loaded gun.. I find it hard to paint all of them with the same brush though, I think for me to do that would sort of have a way of making me feel less in control of my life than the HD riders, Police Officers, little old ladies in big shiny Caddy's or who ever would choose to display such a terrible way of living . I am one who refuses to carry a weapon.. I know from experience how tricky things can become just by doing so and I dont want the hassle. Instead I use other strange tactics, things like riding the faster 1st Genners - if I see road rage in the making I just slow way down till I have an opening and then its bye bye time.. If I am in my car and have stuff happen - I just pull off the road and let em go on their self angered journey.. Anyway, glad you and your family are ok after all this.. Squeeze those kids and tell em ya love em brother,, there have been incidents like you described where parents ended up losing loved ones over very similar stuff and THAT would be horrendous!! Brenner Posted May 24, 2015 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2015 I agree with cowpuc, as a Harley owner I think it is unfair to use the stereotype "Harley rider" due to the actions of a few idiots. I come across all kinds of riders and drivers on different bikes and different cars, everyone thinks they are always right and think the world revolves around them and that they are special. Dirt bag? Yup lots of them, but not all of us. I try to think of it as their ignorance and bad attitude make me look more professional and respectable in a positive manner. I know it isn't much but it is just too easy to look at the negative of the world and people and not see the positive or good. I am trying to change myself from a pessimist to an optimist with the knowledge of knowing what I can change and what I can not. Life is too short. Ofcourse not all Harley iders are snobbish cause many of them won't wave back at you, but cause of that kind of attitude some of us form some kind of resentment towards Harley riders, and I for one, never initiate a wave if I come across a Harley rider, and I will never go over to Harley guys to strike a conversation at coffee stops, but I feel comfortable to go over to any non Harley riders. Of course I have very good friends thatride Harleys.So please no one tell me I am wrong in my thinking....yes, I do judge people by their appearances and their behavior. He is the one with the problem, it just so happens he was riding a Harley. He could have been riding a Honda, yammy or a bmw. Would you slam all of those riders if he was? I have seen guys driving mini-vans do stupid aggressive things on the road. I myself am a very type A person and have to guard against getting involved in road rage. For this reason, my carry is never on bike where I can get to it when riding. This particular rider was a total idiot and sooner or later will likely get what he deserves. Why risk your families safety or your future to make a point with scumbags like this! But please... why label all Harley riders because of this dirtbag? I try to be respectful of other drivers and if I were going slow for some reason, I would have pulled over to the side and let them pass. That being said, remember next week we are going to Quaker Steak for dinner. If you folks wouldn't mind staying WAY back on the way if I am leading. No reason for any Harley riders that we come upon to know that I am riding with you folks. And by ALL means....NO WAVING. That would be a dead giveaway. You just have to take it case by case and learn what is out there. To most Hardley Riders more often than not anymore I think they feel Its the fact you are riding more than what you ride. But saying that I have a neighbor that mouths my bike ever chance he gets but I told him "Bring your scoot and your wallet." Can't get him on the road. And Venturous is right. Within this world there are those who would make it 'bad' for everyone else in their grouping. Take the Indians for example,,, when the white man came over here we considered them both savages and good trading partners. Not all were what we thought they might have been, and not all were that we thought they might have actually were what we thought. Then there are the Dutch,, traditionally they were considered to be the cleanest people in the whole world,, well I'm not saying they are dirty, but there is some mis-conception there as well. We could go on with different folks for different reasons, but it seems that there is always a group within a group that sets the climate that is viewed from the outside. One of the reasons that my mind was never interested in a Harley was the aura the seems to hang with the brand. I don't want that hanging on my coat-tails so to speak. Does that mean that I don't like Harley riders because what they ride??? nope, I like FreeBird, and I will even visit and park right beside a Harley given the opportunity. But yes, I notice they don't wave much,(I think something to do with bike control) and some of them don't talk much,(maybe have a slow to speak impediment) and they are usually too cheap to offer to buy me a coffee,(most of them don't know I Dutch) but hey, there are others out there that have the same opinion when it comes to Spyders and their riders,,,, too bad for them, jealousy will get them nowhere. Now to call them names as a whole bunch,, not my style,,, yes the guy quoted was looking for serious trouble, if I had been in that situation he might have found himself riding awful close to the shoulder, I've been known to slowly squeeze them back if the traffic allows,,,, but to call all Harley riders dirt bags is not fair. Taken further then,, if a person were not a rider then all MC riders are dirt-bags to them, and we need to work on changing the view of ourselves. Maybe then I should make my own way there seeing as Spyder may a problem staying far behind you,, I tell ya, that thing wants to just go,,,,, and if I'm anywhere in the area other Harley's might even construe up the idea that we might know each other and then you would be in the HD black list,,,, and we couldn't have that happen,,,, so Spydie will be lonesome once again. I have also seen people passing on double yellow lines with kids in the vehicle and cant figure out why they would do that. He rides a harley, heck, he'd ride any bike, he just currently owns a harley. I agree, some harley riders make the rest look bad. Howard is the type of guy when someone else asked him to give me a ride because I was stranded he rode his bike to 40miles to get me. Decided to take me on an all day ride just because, terrified my poor husband about where I was and who I was with.
