Petcock Operation

I need the answer to a simple question. On my 87 VR, the petcock has On, Off and Reserve. Reserve is on top, Off to the right and On is at the bottom.

 

There are two openings inside the tank for gas to flow through. The ON opening has a tube extending about 3 or 4 inches from the bottom of the tank and this prevents the bottom of the tank from being used. When switched to RES, the gas drains from the bottom of the tank.

 

The question is, when set on RES, does gas flow through both openings or only the bottom one? I assume only the bottom but I need t confirm. Thanks.

I JUST had my 86's tank petcock out and had to clean it.

 

When it was out, I blew through the "on" standpipe and cycled through the positions (I'm getting it ready to install on my 83 tank).

 

I was able to blow thought the assembly in the "on" and "res" position, nothing in "off".

 

So I'd say it continues to draw through the "on" standpipe while in "res".
