Guest Masio86rv Posted May 15, 2015 #1 Posted May 15, 2015 Found oil on the floor, and rim,on the front right side of my 86. Thought it was coming from caliper, but as I was trying to find the leak,i put my hand on the anti dive unit and the oil started to flow, loose bolts on the unit itself. Wanted to know if that is fork oil leaking or brake fluid? Should I just refill fork with oil if it is just oil, or,since I was thinking about putting the progressive springs in,just Order springs and rebuild it while I'm there? I just want to get back on the road as soon as possible cause Maintenance day at Freebirds is almost here and I'm looking forward to meeting and riding with you all.
cowpuc Posted May 15, 2015 #2 Posted May 15, 2015 If both front and rear brakes have been still working normally it has to be fork oil. I would proceed with the Progressive plan and get to MD!!!! I am looking forward to meeting/riding with you too Mas!!!
Marcarl Posted May 15, 2015 #3 Posted May 15, 2015 Easy enough to figure out. Put some on your fingers, if it's smells like brake fluid, it's brake fluid, other than that it's oil. The oil most times will be black as well. If that doesn't work for you, try cleaning your fingers now with plain water. If they clean up, it's brake fluid, if the liquid stays more or less put, it's oil. Brake fluid will make a mess of any painted surfaces, so keep that in mind. Oil won't bother so much, but either will not be something you want on your brake pads, so best check them out as well.
Patch Posted May 15, 2015 #4 Posted May 15, 2015 Personally I would not ride the bike with a leak like you describe! If I don't have my bikes mixed up, I believe there are O-rings behind the unit? I would say if you are planning to change the springs, now is likely a good time. Patch
Pegasus1300 Posted May 15, 2015 #5 Posted May 15, 2015 If I read your name tag right you have an 86. On those the anti dive is electrical not hydraulic,so your brakes are not hooked to them. That makes it extremely unlikely that your fluid is brake fluid. Drain the oil from the forks, put some fresh in ( I use any cheap 5-30 plus i oz of power steering fluid per fork leg as a seal conditioner),order your springs so you'll have them in time to install at MD.

On a 1986, the anti-dive has no connection to the brakes. The oil you observe is fork oil. (or someone is messing with you and squirting oil on the forks). There is a good chance that the leaking fork oil contaminated the brake pads. Replace or attempt to clean the pads AND rotors. After you fix the leak.
