Vonwolf Posted May 13, 2015 #1 Posted May 13, 2015 I removed my Carburetors, disassembled them, cleaned, replaced parts that looked bad and reinstalled them on my bike. It ran well with the exception of backfiring and popping. At this time I realized I had not addressed the pilot screws? I looked in there and saw that 3 of the 4 carb's pilot screw were completely ground down, no slot for a screwdriver what so ever, so off come the carburetors. I soaked the screws for weeks, drilled them out and first tried the Torx Bit and as last resort the ever useless "easy out". Nothing has worked and I wrecked one of the carburetors so now I'm in the market for a very used Carburetor Set that will work on a '87. The diaphragm and slides are unimportant to me, actually I have most of the new parts I need, the only thing I'm concerned with is removing the Pilot Screws as I have a new set. If anyone has carb's they can let go of I'd appreciate letting me know. Thanks Pete
GAWildKat Posted May 13, 2015 #2 Posted May 13, 2015 Check ebay and pinwall. My husband was thinking he needed to rebuild the carbs on his 87 and had me looking for a set. Also check with Skydoc here on the forums, Earl has been great with helping us get parts we didn't feel comfortable locating on ebay. Best of luck getting the bike running. I feel your pain.
Vonwolf Posted May 14, 2015 Author #3 Posted May 14, 2015 Thanks for the advice, I do keep an eye on eBay and Pinwall I think I got half my CB650 and this bike from them. The first gen's seem to be getting rarer than just a few years ago and their important parts like carb's and TCI's seem to have more gold in them $$$ than before, if I can find a cheap set I can use for a core I'm worried that I buy a set with the same problem I have now and I'm not really in the position to shell out the big buck's a good set will run me. Hopefully something will turn up this seems to be turning out to be a very long term project
utadventure Posted May 14, 2015 #4 Posted May 14, 2015 Pete- I have a set of carbs from an '86 on the shelf. When my set had some issues, I put this set in and went on a long trip. I had the original set rebuilt while I was gone and swapped them out after the trip. Make me a fair offer and I'll get them out to you. Dave
Vonwolf Posted May 15, 2015 Author #5 Posted May 15, 2015 Well it looks like I got really lucky utadventure has just what I need and he gave me a hell of a deal. It would not go to far to say he save my Venture and Dave has offered me help in the past. I cant thank him enough, he is what make this fourm such a great place and between both carb sets I think I'll have one good set and the end of big headach. Thanks Davd your a lifrsaver
Vonwolf Posted May 21, 2015 Author #6 Posted May 21, 2015 I just received the carburetors today and I could not be happier, they're in great shape they look like I could just install them on my '87 and it would tear the road up. I can't thank Dave enough he really came through for me with a fine set of carburetors at price that didn't break me. I can say that Dave saved my bike, the is no way I would have been able to pay those Fleabay prices. This site has some good members and Dave "utadventure" is right at the top of the list! Thanks
