how to tell the difffernce

hey every one Im a newby here but i just made arrangements to pick up

a 1200cc venture its all there but the radio an cb but all the plastic is there just not bolted in he was gonna paint it an lost interest

its a runner too sounds real good for not running in a year

an the price is right too he was asking 500 he said he ll take halve of that

so Im getting it in about 10 days anyways he said its a 1200 an its a 92 but i thought they went to the 1300 in 89 but he insisted its a 92 1200 venture so i thought id ask the experts

I brought my camera to take pictures an didnt take 1 DOH!!

an how do you tell the difference between the gen 1, gen 2 an soo on

 

looking foward to this Ive had many KZ1000s that i road warrior-ed out (watch mad Max) but ive always wanted a venture after I saw a guy pop a wheelie on one brand new back in 86 or 87 just made it look effortlessly Im not gonna be doin that just thought it looked cool

If it is a '92, it is a 1300. Either he is wrong about the year, wrong about the engine size, or it has been swapped. Congrats anyway. Sounds like you got a fantastic deal.

Thats a good buy, Enjoy the new bike the 1300 came out in 1986 and it should say 1300 on the engine side cover. There are those on here that will say that:worthless:when you get a new bike.

Unless I'm mistaken, the gents on the forum would refer to a 1992 venture and a Gen 1 MkII.

 

Gen 1 being the first generation Yamaha venture, MKII being the second major update to the initial release (like ver 1.0 and ver 2.0 in computer geek speak). MKII is usually a military term referring to a hardware update, still the same machine but enough differences to be it's own variant.

 

The registration papers will clear up what year it is (even if the frame sticker is missing) and if the engine isn't a 1300 it's been swapped indicating the bike has had some major work in it's past. If that's the case, problem is you have no idea how many miles are on the engine/transmission since the odometer is only going to tell you what is on the chassis.

 

But for 500 bucks (even better at 250, I paid 200 for a parts bike with no engine), what do you have to loose?

WALLEY, when you get the bike compare the VIN with the engine number. The VIN is on two locations: stamped into the steel of the steering head and on a white label on the lower frame beneath the brake pedal. The VIN will tell you (and me) what the year is as well as a build date. The engine number should match the VIN, ie, if it is a 1992, the VIN should read as "JYA1NLE0(x)NA045(xxx)" if it is a US49 state version and the engine number should be 1NL-045(xxx). If the bike is a California intended market Venture, the VIN will read "JYA1UNC0(x)NA011(xxx). The last three numbers of the engine should match the last three digits of the VIN.
