Joelgonia Posted May 11, 2015 #1 Posted May 11, 2015 Recently purchased my first Yamaha and need advice on a few enhancements: - Backfiring when throttle down - Carbs recently rebuilt, 3 tanks Premium gas with cleaner, still does it - is this normal? - Gas tank - Literature says 6 gal, bone dry fill up is 4.5, am I mistaken? - Ergonomics - Little cramped for my 6'2" 250 lb frame, like to lengthen the gear shift and rear brake pedal, possibly move the seat back, ideas? - Windshield - Accustom to running KlockWerks Flare, is a similar windshield available? - Carb Synchronizer - Maybe Morgan CarbTune -- Is this recommended for this bike? - Tires - Will need new tires within 1,500 miles, suggestions? - Syn Oil - Always used in my other bikes, any reason not to for the Venture? FYI... I average 15,000 miles annual, about 50% 2 up with gear, hope to get 100k + miles on this bike without major rebuild Thanks in advance, Joel

This is not normal. Tuning the Carbs could be all it needs - Gas tank - Literature says 6 gal, bone dry fill up is 4.5, am I mistaken? There is maybe a gallon left when you move to reserve. Is this bone dry in the reserve position? - Ergonomics - Little cramped for my 6'2" 250 lb frame, like to lengthen the gear shift and rear brake pedal, possibly move the seat back, ideas? Don't think you can do either but hiway pegs will help you to stretch out - Windshield - Accustom to running KlockWerks Flare, is a similar windshield available? Lots of folks here like the F4 windshields and they come in lots of sizes - Carb Synchronizer - Maybe Morgan CarbTune -- Is this recommended for this bike? Morgan Carbtune is what I use and works a charm - Tires - Will need new tires within 1,500 miles, suggestions? Dunlop E3 is a popular choice - Syn Oil - Always used in my other bikes, any reason not to for the Venture? No reason I can think of. If you like Synthetic then use synthetic. FYI... I average 15,000 miles annual, about 50% 2 up with gear, hope to get 100k + miles on this bike without major rebuild Thanks in advance, Joel Mine has 182,000 Kms on it and I intend to get another 180,000 Kms on it without problems.. They come new with 5 year unlimited mile warranty so my guess is 100K without major problems is a snap. Oil changes and tires.. proper maintenance.. it will be a dependable bike

Most of the issues you mention are easily sorted out and covered in great detail here in older threads (usually the most details are in threads from 3 - 5 years ago), so I won't go into great detail here. Your afterfire is a very common problem and usually easy to fix. A stock RSV will absolutely NOT do this unless something is wrong with either the fuel mixture, ignition or exhaust headers. It usually happens because the bike runs close to the 'too lean' point and a slight change in fuel mixture easily results in poor combustion. You absolutely should NOT NOT NOT disable the AIS system as some people will quickly advise - that does NOTHING to fix the problem with your engine, it just hides the symptom! The most common cause is a vacuum leak from cracked rubber caps on the vacuum nipples. Other causes are improperly set carbs, bad plugs, and exhaust leaks at the headers or Y pipes. The RSV tank does actually hold 6 gallons, but is designed to prevent you from totally filling it. You can improve this by venting the filler neck just under the lip of the tank opening. No reasonable way to move the seat. I am 6'5" and use highway pegs a lot. I personally think the Morgan tool is junk, but many people like it. The old-style four gauge set is MUCH better. For tires, I like Dunlop E3 or Avon Venoms. I have written a LOT about tires and my detailed testing in the past, so you can find lots of info there. Just make CERTAIN you NEVER NEVER buy the stock Brickstone tires called for in the owner's manual - your bike will handle like a dead pig. Goose
RedRider Posted May 12, 2015 #4 Posted May 12, 2015 Welcome to the family. First rule. We need pictures of your new bike. Second suggested rule, listen to V7Goose. I am 6'4" and ride iron butt rides with the Venture. Offset Longhorn highway pegs allow you to stretch out in comfort. You may find handlebar risers will also add to your riding pleasure. +1 on the Dunlop Elite3 tires. Synthetic vs. Dino oil? See how your clutch works with each. Mine didn't seem to like syn so I've been running Dino. 130000 miles and running great. RR
Joelgonia Posted July 19, 2015 Author #5 Posted July 19, 2015 Thanks for the replies -- Now tying to figure out which conversion kit works best for the rear running / brake / turn lights. Looking through the posts now to see if anyone has positive or negative suggestions. Joel
Condor Posted July 19, 2015 #6 Posted July 19, 2015 On the backfiring on deceleration all the suggestions are right on, but I found another. Sabotage. While working on my '99 which had been dealer serviced by the previous owner I ran across the attached when I had my tank off. I know chafe when I see it, and this wasn't. It was hidden on the back side of the hose where it couldn't be seen and was definitely cut. The bike backfired a little with the OEM exhaust, but like crazy after installing the Bub's. I thought it was the Bub's. Looks like that wasn't my problem, but some devious mechanic that wanted to create additional work. Easy fix with some 100 mile an hour tape.
MikeWa Posted July 19, 2015 #7 Posted July 19, 2015 1.) Fuel tank capacity. There are several threads on punching the filler neck to attain the full six gallon capacity. 2.) Windshields. There are also many threads on windshields. 3.) Carb syncing. There are many threads and how to's on this. 4.) Backfiring. This popping back through the exhaust is not normal. There are many threads on this. I am NOT a proponent of disabling the ais system though. I would rather find and fix the problem. 5.) Oil and tires. There are extensive threads on these subjects. Just be aware these bikes can be oil sensitive and if you get one your bike doesn't like it may scream at you. So you are in the right place to have your questions answered. Just let the form search engine be your friend. Good Luck Mike
Motorcycle Mike Posted July 19, 2015 #8 Posted July 19, 2015 "Backfiring when throttle down - Carbs recently rebuilt, 3 tanks Premium gas with cleaner, still does it - is this normal?" These engines a designed to run on regular. I don't know if premium will make it backfire or not, but your not doing yourself any favors either.
Rick Haywood Posted July 20, 2015 #9 Posted July 20, 2015 135,000 miles on mine and no major problems, Regulator, Ignition switch and clutch spring. Other than that pretty much change oil every 4,000 miles and ride. I ride about 25,000 a year and do not want or need problems. +1 on the E3s

If your going to add LED turn signals you need to add the electronic flasher relay or the lights will flash too fast. http://www.customdynamics.com/tailconversion_kit.htm
