Venturous Randy Posted April 28, 2015 #1 Posted April 28, 2015 I have put many miles on motorcycles in my 51 years of riding and have wondered how someone can be looking toward you can just not see you. One of my closest calls was riding beside another car that was slowly passing me and a girl on a side road was looking right toward us and just before I got to her, she started pulling out. The only thing that saved me was having very loud air horns on my motorcycle. No, she was not texting or talking on the phone, she was looking right at us, or particularly the car beside me and evidently was waiting to make sure the car was not going to change lanes. To her, I became invisible for a couple of seconds and if you look at the attachment, you can see why. I posted this in another thread, but decided it may get more views if I created it's own thread. It is amazing how large you can make the dots and they still disappear. You can also change speeds and colors. Randy http://michaelbach.de/ot/mot-mib/index.html
Sailor Posted April 28, 2015 #2 Posted April 28, 2015 People see what they expect to see. If your keys are on the kitchen table and you know the table has been cleared you can scan the table and not see them. This is because your eye takes a picture of one end of the table then jumps to the other end and takes another picture. You would get motion sickness if it did not. Your mind expects the table to be empty so that is the info it gives you. When you stop and look at the middle of the table you see the keys. I was riding with a friend recently and he was in front. A car pulled up beside me then started to pull over into my lane. He saw the bike up front but expected the lane beside him to be empty. When my Wolo went off he jumped so high I thought his head was going to hit the roof.
MikeWa Posted April 28, 2015 #4 Posted April 28, 2015 I frequently don't see moon walking bears. Mike
bongobobny Posted April 28, 2015 #5 Posted April 28, 2015 I had to watch twice before I saw the bear...
eagleeye Posted April 28, 2015 #6 Posted April 28, 2015 To bad that video doesn't air here. My first moon walking bear too
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted April 29, 2015 #7 Posted April 29, 2015 That was the first video they showed us when I took an "experienced rider course" a few years back. Teaches you how easy it is to be blinded by the surroundings.
videoarizona Posted April 29, 2015 #8 Posted April 29, 2015 Common problem. Situation awareness or lack of, inattention caused by texting, etc., driving while in a "zone", all can contribute to cars hitting bikes, pedestrians... When I see a driver looking right at me...I KNOW that person doesn't see me. Simply because of the above article and video. If the head is swiveling, they see me...but ...they might be a "Type A" driver and are looking for a chance to scream out into a gap in traffic. In two week period, I had two girls in a car decide to try and occupy my lane on the freeway, a guy in a Lexus SUV yacking on phone (in left ear) try to occupy my city lane while I was in it and another lady pull out in front of me at a cross street. At least the young girl driver was apologetic when I beeped my horn (having slowed down) and she looked in the mirror and saw me.....the other two could not have cared less. And that doesn't make me smile, for sure.
