sfcrader Posted April 20, 2015 #1 Posted April 20, 2015 Need some advice please. I did a complete clutch replacement from disks to slave to a rebuilt master. When taking off from a stop I need to feather the clutch and throttle. Once on the road she runs like moster strong in all gears. Thanks
ragtop69gs Posted April 21, 2015 #2 Posted April 21, 2015 Could just be a matter of getting used to the new clutch 's friction zone. What clutch kit did you put in?
Flyinfool Posted April 21, 2015 #3 Posted April 21, 2015 Are you saying that this is the first time the clutch actually worked and hooked up with no slip?
Seaking Posted April 21, 2015 #4 Posted April 21, 2015 The description of the problem is not clear.. As posted, it sounds like the clutch is doing what it's supposed to do in order to properly "slip" as you slowly release the clutch lever which allows a smooth transition of the engine power to the drivetrain.. Otherwise it would be a direct 'on / off' clutch system.. You have to 'ride the clutch' from a dead stop to move on.. BUT, if you mean that the bike won't move unless you have to ride the clutch a whole lot before anything happens, but rock solid once you get rolling and shifting through gears, then you have a problem. It might be that you do not have your bail wire installed properly into the grooves or the ends popped out, and its not allowing the clutch to function properly. I had that happen to me early on when I did my first clutch cleanings. The clutch felt weak trying to roll away, almost like it was slipping but then it would grab properly.. The tab end of the bail wire had popped out. Once installed properly, all was good.
sfcrader Posted April 21, 2015 Author #5 Posted April 21, 2015 I used skydoc 17 complete upgrade kit. I took it apart twice just to make sure everything was in correctly. The instructions said I did not need to reinstall the bail wire. This is the first hydraulic clutch on a motorcycle. Before I did the upgrade it was slipping. Maybe it is just that I am not use to it yet.
bongobobny Posted April 21, 2015 #6 Posted April 21, 2015 There will be a short "wear in" period as well with everything new. The clutch will act like an on/off device until everything gets properly seated and worn in...

If so then you will end up with the wire, 2 big washers and the half disk left over. If you put in just the new spring. then the wire retainer should have been put back in. If you upgraded to the full clutch disk, the friction zone feels very different from what you are used to. The clutch will not grab until the last little bit of lever travel, and it will grab quickly with very little movement of the lever. It does take some getting used to because it is a very different feel.
ragtop69gs Posted April 21, 2015 #8 Posted April 21, 2015 I'll refrain from further comments till the OP replies with more details.
sfcrader Posted April 21, 2015 Author #9 Posted April 21, 2015 Yes it was a full disk that replaced the half disk. Just came back from a short ride. At a stop in 1st gear releasing the clutch lever 3/4 way out I can feel the bike starting to move forward. At that point I need to give more gas and move clutch lever back and forth until she starts moving. It like taking off with the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear. Does this help
MiCarl Posted April 21, 2015 #10 Posted April 21, 2015 I have the kit you have (in a 1st gen). It seems the friction zone is narrower than on the stock clutch. You might just have to get used to it, you shouldn't have to move the lever in and out. Maybe if you head over to Mansfield @dingy will run it around the block and let you know what he thinks......
sfcrader Posted April 21, 2015 Author #11 Posted April 21, 2015 Thanks to all, I am going to keep going as some same I might just need to get use to the friction zone. I might just have to try and get in contact with dingy.
sfcrader Posted May 11, 2015 Author #12 Posted May 11, 2015 Found the problem, new spring would not recoil back. Replaced with old master clutch spring now it feels and works much better.
