mralex714 Posted April 18, 2015 #1 Posted April 18, 2015 After rebuilding the carb and some other things I can't get the bike to run. It started once and then needed starting fluid. It will run 30-45 seconds and the sputter out. I tried 2 other fuel pumps with the same results. Have I missed something in my reassembly?
mralex714 Posted April 18, 2015 Author #3 Posted April 18, 2015 Of course you changed filter?? Yes I did I also cleaned and sealed the tank with red kote.
BlueSky Posted April 18, 2015 #4 Posted April 18, 2015 Maybe the sealer sealed the tank vent and the pump can't pump after it pulls a vacuum. Just wild guessing here.
flyday58 Posted April 18, 2015 #5 Posted April 18, 2015 If you remove the hose from the filter in or out port does gas flow out? Didn't shut the petcock off by any chance? Does the pump click each time you turn on the key or cycle the kill switch? If it does, is it like the carbs are empty or just one or two clicks like the carbs are full? I'll bet it's a simple fix.
mralex714 Posted April 18, 2015 Author #6 Posted April 18, 2015 Maybe the sealer sealed the tank vent and the pump can't pump after it pulls a vacuum. Just wild guessing here. I suppose it's possible. I took the hose off the vent and there is a brace plug with a tiny hole in the middle. Couldn't get anything in it.

Fuel flows freely all the way to the carbs, petcock is open, the pump clicks and after it stall I opened the bowl drains and fuel is in the carbs.

I guess it's time to ask about the "other things" you did to try and see if there's a connection. Sure sounds like gas is not flowing. Can you get the cycle to repeat, i.e., use starting fluid, run for 30-45 secs, sputter out, repeat? Or after it sputters out is it a no-go?
Yammer Dan Posted April 19, 2015 #9 Posted April 19, 2015 A check on fuel flow and go back from there if you don't have it. Kink in line or something silly like that??
van avery Posted April 19, 2015 #10 Posted April 19, 2015 Did you check the level in the carb bowls? Clear tube on the drain lines and check per the book on the levels. May be too full and flooding it out. I'm sure you using a fully charged battery, low voltage will turn it over but not start it. Have you checked spark on the plugs ? Good luck
Vonwolf Posted April 19, 2015 #11 Posted April 19, 2015 This is probably very obvious, but I had to learn it the hard way, have you put the airBox and Filter back on? My bike will barely idle on full choke without the airboxes. I put the box assembly back on and the bike runs pretty good I just have to sync the carbs and hope the backfiring goes away
Prairiehammer Posted April 19, 2015 #12 Posted April 19, 2015 Fuel flows freely all the way to the carbs, petcock is open, the pump clicks and after it stall I opened the bowl drains and fuel is in the carbs. There very well may be fuel in the bowls after the stall, but not enough fuel to feed the jets. Hook up a clear hose to the bowl drains. Note the fuel bowl level. Take the bike for a ride. After the stall, observe the fuel bowl level.
Venturous Randy Posted April 19, 2015 #13 Posted April 19, 2015 How old are the plugs? I know some like the more expensive plugs, but I have used the cheap Autolites I get from Advance Auto and they have worked very good for me. These bikes can be very sensitive to plugs, especially if you have run a heavy dose of Sea Foam. Randy
mralex714 Posted April 19, 2015 Author #14 Posted April 19, 2015 I have done all of the above. The bike did finally start idle ran up to3000 rpm. I ran the idle screw down and the bile stalled at about 1500 rpm. I started it again and let it run at 1500 and found the front 2 cylinders never heated up. I will get some plugs today. The ones in there are about 6 months old and were fine before the work.
mralex714 Posted April 19, 2015 Author #15 Posted April 19, 2015 I finally got it running. My problem was 2 things first were 3 yes 3 bad or intermittent fuel pumps and carb sync that was way off. One fuel pump would run but would not move any gas. The other 2 would click when I turned on the key but would quit after start. I connected these 2 directly to 12 volts and they would run then quit. I finally got one to run with a whack from a wrench, I was then able to get a reasonable sync. The sync was so far off that I had to start at 3000 rpm (wouldn't idle any lower) and work down from there.
Yammer Dan Posted April 20, 2015 #16 Posted April 20, 2015 CONGRATS!!! Sometimes ya just gotta :bang head::bang head: keep at it!! Try tearing those pumps down and cleaning good??
flyday58 Posted April 21, 2015 #17 Posted April 21, 2015 I put new points from an ebay parts house in my pump and it refused to run, even after "adjusting" the hell out of it. Put the old points back in, been working fine ever since. Go figure.
kinsmd69 Posted April 21, 2015 #18 Posted April 21, 2015 Does each carb have a fuel pump? Different from the main fuel pump that pumps gas to all carbs?
Yammer Dan Posted April 21, 2015 #19 Posted April 21, 2015 Does each carb have a fuel pump? Different from the main fuel pump that pumps gas to all carbs? No, only one pump.
