a1bummer Posted March 28, 2008 #1 Posted March 28, 2008 Anybody else besides myself have problems with people when parking their bikes in disabled parking spaces? In this neck of the woods we can get plates and cards for our cars but not our bikes. The guy behind the counter at the DMV told me that I didn't need to display anything on my bike but I needed to carry the paperwork in case an officer asks for it. That's good enough for me. But I sure do get some dirty looks and I don't enjoy having to track down the guy who writes me ticket when I'm not around to defend myself. So far I've been lucky and haven't had to go to court to prove I have the right to park there. It would save me some headaches if there were disabled plates for a cycle.

BEER30 Posted March 28, 2008 #3 Posted March 28, 2008 I cannot get handicapped plates for my scoot as my personalized plates takes up the number of characters allowed . I just take my placard in a plexiglass frame and using a pistol cable/padlock and secure it to the handlebars and mirror . I have had only one time a WallyWorld rent-a-cop that questioned me when I came out of the store . He detained me and called the state-trooper . Tropper wanted to cite me , but he could not proove otherwise that I was in violation as the laws here in NC state that the placard can be used on any motor vehicle and does not disclaim a motorcycle . I made his donut kinda soggie ! :rotf: BEER30
kantornado Posted March 28, 2008 #4 Posted March 28, 2008 I don't need a handicap plate but I always find parking by the front door. At WM, KM, Sams club, Albertsons, Cub, Target there is always parking near the bike racks on the sidewalk and have never had a problem. I just make sure the bike is out of the walkway so people can pass by. At a Mall in MN I was given a warning by a rent a cop and chased him down to ask him about the warning and he told me that it was the malls policy. I contacted the mall and explained about the bike sinking in the asphalt and if they could make a spot for motorcycle parking. The next spring the mall put up a sign for motorcycle parking. Just my worth........................................Ron

Uturn Posted March 29, 2008 #7 Posted March 29, 2008 Makes you want to break it off in the LEO that doesn't have COMMON SENSE or is trying to elevate his statue in life through the expense of others. My worth. MIKE aka Uturn
86er Posted March 29, 2008 #8 Posted March 29, 2008 People say that I don't have any respect for the handicapped; But that's not true! I know that if it weren't for them, I never would find a parking place! In Ga. you can get handicap plates for a scoot. And if one bike in the space has handicapped plates, then you can park as many bikes there as can fit, even if they don't have them.
eagleeye Posted March 29, 2008 #9 Posted March 29, 2008 Boy, you guys in Georgia got it all figrued out. Aren't you supposed to be out riding this weekend? OK, I see it's in the morning------Have a great ride!! Steve
MikeM8560 Posted March 29, 2008 #10 Posted March 29, 2008 They have so many handicap spot theese days they should have degrees of disability like Wheelchair drivers up front then guys with one leg, a cane and lastly wheel chair passenger can get pushed in anyway. Bring back the days anyone could get a good parking spot. and dont flog me my Dad who lives with me in in a chair.

Guest tx2sturgis Posted March 29, 2008 #12 Posted March 29, 2008 Talk to your local motorcycle rights organization...they can get that taken care of...here in Texas, its the TMRA II. They should be able to help get the laws ammended for MC Handicapped plates. I believe its a federal regulation that the state DMV has to accomodate disabled riders. I had a friend, who has since passed away, who had handicapped plates on his scooter. He had a bad heart, diabetes, and a prosthetic leg. He would tell a few stories of...usually little ol ladies, who would get in his face and gripe him out for parking in a handicapped space. He'd tap on his metal leg with his cane as he pulled it out of the saddlebag, to show them that part, then point to his handicapped plate, then clutch his heart and say he just wore himself out doing that, and please go bother someone else. Jay Mike ( his name) was an old school biker, and he said it was much easier to ride his scooter than get in and out of the car. So he rode.
Tom Posted March 29, 2008 #13 Posted March 29, 2008 Was your wife with you goin in? Yes..I never take advantage of it unless She is with me. At times when She feels OK we will park other places but if its a "Bad Day",Yes we use it.

I was so tired of people parking in Handi-cap spots, I joined the local C.O.P. program, went throught the 14 week Citizens Class/School, 40 hour ride along with Officers, Radio School, Parking Enforcement class & Radar School. I'm Florida State Certified PES(Parking Enforcment). In the 2-1/2 years with them, I've writen 1076 tickets, for both Fire Lane & Handi-capped spots. You have the right to question anyone, about parking in one of these spots, and I do!!!! everyone that has a placard, knows they have to show it to a person If they are asked. all the cards have the date of birth on them, 7 numbers from the right, or 9 from the left some states, 0-4 male 5-9 female placed with in the numbers. remember don't just jump at someone for parking there, they can park there to pick someone up, or drop off, they don't have to be the card holder. and handi-capped isn't just phyical, some states allow brain -farts too.
BEER30 Posted March 29, 2008 #15 Posted March 29, 2008 handi-capped isn't just phyical, some states allow brain -farts too. Heck , that will entitle 99.9% of all Venture riders here to get HC plates ! :rotf::stirthepot: BEER30
Yammer Dan Posted March 29, 2008 #16 Posted March 29, 2008 Hey Skid can I use mine for the car with the Bike???
a1bummer Posted March 31, 2008 Author #17 Posted March 31, 2008 Thanks for all the input guys. I find it easier to ride then get in and out of a car, so I ride whenever I can. We're supposed to get some crappy snow and rain mixed today so I'll be stuck in the cage. Luckily for me some of the places I frequent have made a note of my situation, as well as the parking enforcement, so that helps with the little frustrations. If there is an empty space close to the building, I'll take advantage of it and leave the HC spaces to the people who need it more than I do. Sometimes I park in the lined area at the end of the parking spots, but that make me a bit nervous. That's not a parking space.
