Replaced my choke knob

My choke knob was a boring, standard looking, plastic knob. What was Yamaha thinking?

I pulled it off, and replaced it with a nickle plated .308 shell casing that I filled with epoxy.

Maybe this should be in the "poor man's fixes" forum? It cost me nearly nothing. I'm likely going to add little things like this to the front ends of the bag rails, bar ends, etc.

I made a "matching" valve stem cap using a 10mm shell casing.

I agree, they could have at least added a little bling to the knob. There's several styles on the aftermarket. I use these...

That's the one I have also. However, the shell casing idea is interesting. The valve stem cover is pretty cool. FYI, I would suggest next time you replace your front tire, replace the stem with a metal one. The additional weight of the shell is pretty minor, but there are a lot of shock/vibration on the wheels that might cause some difficulties.

 

Did you epoxy a standard valve cap into the shell?

It's a great idea. I just don't like the look of the thing hanging out in the wind. Personally if I had thought of it I would have cut the thing a little shorter. Even on the Schrader cap. I think he mentioned using epoxy...

Yes, fill shell with epoxy and let it set hard. Drill out the proper size, add a little more epoxy, and slide it on. It doesn't stick out too far, but is easy to reach.

Yes, I do intend to replace the rubber valve stem with a metal one when I get the tire changed. And all I did was epoxy a standard plastic cap into the shell. I did not do the rear, as it's angled and I didn't want the extra weight bending it when riding.

 

So shells may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can use anything you want for a choke knob....dice, little ball, barbie head, little skull, or one that you turn out of wood.
