rickardracing Posted April 12, 2015 #1 Posted April 12, 2015 Yup, tore it down to do what I thought was a long over due valve adjustment. I have just under 48,000 miles on it. Well, got her all apart, checked the clearances and................they where all within spec. Most where at the mean (middle) of tolerance. Really????.......no way. Grabbed a new sheet that I printed off from this site.......checked them again and compared the first to the second checks. Yup, all good. Boy that was a lot of work to take this sucker apart only to find that it did not need it. Not sure if I should be pissed that after all that, it was ok and I did not have to do it....or be happy because the Yamaha quality is so good that it is ok even after all those miles..................I am so confused.......mentally distraught over this......I don't know what to think.........
Bubber Posted April 12, 2015 #2 Posted April 12, 2015 Be thankful, The other is really just a waste of time. It is what it is, and it is good. You can quote me on that. Hope mine is as good as yours was. Bubber
Flyinfool Posted April 12, 2015 #3 Posted April 12, 2015 I am at 56K and about to do the first check. IF it shows that all is good you at least now have peace of mind knowing that all is good. If you did not check, then with every ride you would be worried about burning that exhaust valve. So all was not for nothing. Peace of mind is worth a lot.

I am replacing spark plugs today, draining the coolant and I am going to seal off the plugs on the sides of the jugs. My fan rubs the radiator when it runs, so I am going to take care of that issue while it is torn down. Got to get this puppy ready for my trip to California. I will be putting a fresh rear tire on it in July before we leave.
sleepy2 Posted April 27, 2015 #5 Posted April 27, 2015 Just had my valves checked at dealers at the 40,000klm checkup. Shop time was to be 4 1/2 hrs and took 7hrs.(was told these things take time) Plugs/oil/rear gear oil changed also. Nothing out of the ordinary. As some say this process probably isn't really needed BUT to keep 5 year warranty I have to get it checked! Mine is 2012
rickardracing Posted April 27, 2015 Author #6 Posted April 27, 2015 I changed the plugs, new coolant and valve cover gaskets. Ran me $120 in parts. Definitely a lot of time to do. But now I know more about my bike in the process.
djh3 Posted April 28, 2015 #7 Posted April 28, 2015 Lots of sayings come to mind. Better safe than sorry, now you know for sure etc. Your dang toot'n its a lot of work. but you know where its at and are good to go for a long time. I set mine to the low side when I did mine so I can get a bit more mileage in between hopefully. Have you done a rear tire on the 2nd gen before?
Freebird Posted April 28, 2015 #8 Posted April 28, 2015 You set them on the LOW side to hopefully get more mileage? Don't they tighten up as they wear?
Venturous Randy Posted April 28, 2015 #9 Posted April 28, 2015 You set them on the LOW side to hopefully get more mileage? Don't they tighten up as they wear? That was the first thing that came to mind for me also. Randy
Flyinfool Posted April 28, 2015 #10 Posted April 28, 2015 :sign yeah that: I will be setting mine at the HIGH side to make it last longer.
djh3 Posted April 28, 2015 #11 Posted April 28, 2015 OK got my thoughts bass ackwards. But Im guessing you got my drift.
