Mike R Posted April 9, 2015 #1 Posted April 9, 2015 (edited) I have an 86 venture and I'm kind of thinking I have a vmax final drive but I'm not sure , so I went out and made sure of rpm's . At 55 it spins at 3000 rpm and 60 is 3500 rpm's and at 75 it's 4500. I've read that the max final will raise rpm's 350 to 500 . I wish there was a distinguishing mark or shape to look for on the final drive . Thnx for your help . Thnx Mike Edited April 9, 2015 by Mike R
Venturous Randy Posted April 9, 2015 #2 Posted April 9, 2015 It might help if you gave us more info about your bike, like what is it and what do you know about it? A V-Max rear will raise the RPM's about 10% from stock. Randy

So I am going to say that your '86 has the stock Venture final drive.
Mike R Posted April 9, 2015 Author #4 Posted April 9, 2015 Venturous Randy sorry about that I fixed it and I have an 86 venture that I bought used dec of 2014 . Thnx Mike
Venturous Randy Posted April 10, 2015 #5 Posted April 10, 2015 Keep in mind that these bikes were designed when the national speed limit was 55MPH. The other thing is your tach may read a little off, but most read surprisingly good, unless they are dragging. I good running 1st gen with a V-max rear will be real strong in 1st and 2nd gear, kinda like, hang on for dear life. The standard ratio is 3.30 and the V-Max ratio is 3.67. If you pulled the rear end, and checked revolutions, with the ring gear making one revolution, the stock pinion gear would make 3 and 1/3 and a V-Max would make 3 and 2/3's revolutions. Randy
videoarizona Posted April 10, 2015 #6 Posted April 10, 2015 Hmmm...went for a ride on my 89 1st Gen yesterday. I see different numbers... 75 mph indicated is 4100 rpm...or a tad less. 80 mph indicated is around 4500. Running stock type tires at stock sizes. I think my speedo is about 3mph off...75mph indicated is 72mph. FYI. david
dna9656 Posted April 10, 2015 #7 Posted April 10, 2015 As I was reading the posts I was thinking, "just get the ring and pinion tooth count and divine the pinion (# of teeth) into the ring (# of teeth) and get the ratio, then get a V-Max one and do the same but you already have Randy...BUT my point is the V-max differential will give a lower top speed, while giving more "pick up" at low speeds because the V-max gear makes more torque at low speeds than the Venture. My Speedo on my 83.5 is right on the money; I know because I drive by 2 of those "YOUR SPEED" radar things everyday and at 35 it's dead on. RPM might be a different story....
Mike R Posted April 11, 2015 Author #8 Posted April 11, 2015 I have a magazine from 1986 when they tested the 86 venture and they report 60 mph is 3200 pm and with my bike 3200 is about 56-57 this is why im thinking I have a max rear drive ,and I have gone by one of those your speed things also and I was not on power, i was holding steady throttle and my speed is on the money . as for tires im running metzler me888 front and rear . this is why I wish there is a mark or a mold difference between the max and venture rear drives , oh well I guess I have what I have right ? thnx for all of the replies guys Mike
