Scotty_vince Posted April 7, 2015 #1 Posted April 7, 2015 I have an '83 with a broken head bolt and all that goes with it. I am going to replace the complete engine and am contemplating using a later 86-93 1300. My question is obviously, will the 1300 just bolt up in place of the 1200?

Yes, it will bolt up in place of the 1200, but (there's always a "but"), the carbs on the 1200 are smaller than on the 1300 and in the case of your '83, the carbs and the TCI are unique. The wiring harness is different as well. Having said all that, there are many folks who have done the change with good results.
Scotty_vince Posted April 7, 2015 Author #3 Posted April 7, 2015 So I can use a 1300 block and use the carbs and electronics from the 1200.
Prairiehammer Posted April 7, 2015 #4 Posted April 7, 2015 So I can use a 1300 block and use the carbs and electronics from the 1200. Umm, maybe. The performance won't be as good with a 1300cc engine and 1200cc carbs. If your new engine is a 1990-1993, then the TCI will have to be from a 1990-1993. Or you will have to replace the pick-up coils and rotor with a 1983-1989. Like I said, anything can be done, just a matter of working out the details.
Condor Posted April 7, 2015 #5 Posted April 7, 2015 So I can use a 1300 block and use the carbs and electronics from the 1200. I sold a low mile 87/1300 to a local, and he used the 1200 carbs and electrical, and it worked great.... I have an 83/84 with an 86/1300 in it with no problems.
Scotty_vince Posted April 8, 2015 Author #6 Posted April 8, 2015 Are the electrical connections different?
