Gary N. Posted March 27, 2008 #1 Posted March 27, 2008 Looks like Harbour Freight is selling something similar to the Stebel air horn. Probably just a matter of time before they put them on sale. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97099
KeithR Posted March 27, 2008 #2 Posted March 27, 2008 Looks identical to me. I like the chrome cap on the compressor part. http://www.wolo-mfg.com/air.htm Keith
AZSpyder Posted March 28, 2008 #3 Posted March 28, 2008 They do go on sale from time to time but are rated at a lower sound output level. I once asked here if anyone had ever tried one but never got an answer. Sometimes you can get close to the Harbor Freight price on their horn for a Stebel. Jerrry
KiteSquid Posted March 28, 2008 #4 Posted March 28, 2008 They are the same unit, just with or without a sticker and you can buy them with or without "chrome" plate.
MAINEAC Posted March 28, 2008 #5 Posted March 28, 2008 It's very similar but not the same... Decible level is lower... Looks like the Wolo has more chrome on the compresor. and is about 10 bucks more... I've seen Wolos in Parts stores but not the chrome ones.
KiteSquid Posted March 28, 2008 #6 Posted March 28, 2008 BTW my local Advance Auto Parts store stocks the black Wolo unit, and it is a twin for my Stable unit, but without the chrome and an added sticker on the back... I would like to do a side by side comparison of two new units in a anechoic chamber with a calibrated sound pressure level meter. I would bet that they are within 3 db of each other.
MrRadi8 Posted March 30, 2008 #7 Posted March 30, 2008 Close but not loud enough. Only 118 dB Stebel is 139 dB.
Gary N. Posted March 31, 2008 Author #8 Posted March 31, 2008 Close but not loud enough. Only 118 dB Stebel is 139 dB. Don't believe everything you read. I'd be willing to bet that they're all made in the same little Chinese factory and that dB # is just something somebody picked out of thin air. Just like a lot of other stuff now days, all made in the same factory, painted different colours or different stickers and marketed by different retailers. Look at the cheap Harbour Freight tools, we have the same ones over here in Canada sold by Princess Automotive all packaged up with they're name all over them but still the same tools.
Vance Posted March 31, 2008 #9 Posted March 31, 2008 Especially interesting since for every 3 db increase it takes twice the energy.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted March 31, 2008 #10 Posted March 31, 2008 Could be the rating system used is the only difference....one may be measured closer...who enforces a standard? Probably nobody.

Gary N. Posted March 31, 2008 Author #12 Posted March 31, 2008 Who has access to an anechoic chamber and some calibrated sound pressure level meters?????? Believe it or not my son does. He's doing his thesis in Mechanical Engineering on the sound from computer fans of all things. This stuff is way over my head.
MAINEAC Posted April 1, 2008 #13 Posted April 1, 2008 My Buddy has a Mini-Beast which is a Stebel with a chrome cover over it and is advertised as 128db and it's noticebly not as loud as my 139db Stebel. http://www.bikerlawblog.com/media/blogs/wind/beast2.gif http://www.bikerhiway.com/images/large/propad/pmh-02_LRG.jpg
KiteSquid Posted April 1, 2008 #14 Posted April 1, 2008 Being inside the enclsosure it would attuniate the SPL. Gary N., IF you can convince him to test them all we would need is a set of horns.............. All, So who is contemplating purchasing a horn that could loan it out while still in the sealed package???? I have a Stable on my RSV, but it is used, or I would loan mine. Also, Stabel might be selling off the horns that dont toot as loud to Wolo, or they may be detuned...on purpose.
