davitk Posted April 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 7, 2015 I'm looking at an '03 with 55k, nice and clean one owner Venture at the local dealer. It ran beautifully once it was warmed up, but the choke lever is sticky, and there is residue up under the carbs. I'm not sure what is normal and am hoping you guys can help me out. I rode it twice a week ago, then went back today and it didn't start. They are saying someone left the ignition turned to accessory and toasted the battery. While I'd like to take what they say at face value let's be real these are professional salesman. There is a battery tender on the bike, and of course the cap was off the plug so apparently it had been used recently. How likely is it there may be a bigger charging system issue? Final question for you guys is value. Tires are fairly new, Bridgestone Excedra and Dunlop 404s. Cosmetically excellent. Opinions and advice appreciated! http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/IMG_20150406_151805125_zpsnqgrlcs5.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/IMG_20150406_151944419_HDR_zpsbd4y8akq.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/IMG_20150406_151605463_zpsfvxuzaem.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/_20150406_193223_zpsrfxq5jyr.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/IMG_20150406_151854181_HDR_zps8pk3xikj.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/IMG_20150406_152129283_HDR_zpsnkfnml3s.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/IMG_20150406_152143560_HDR_zpsddcl3kvw.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/IMG_20150406_152112603_HDR_zpsthwxm29w.jpg

rbig1 Posted April 7, 2015 Share #3 Posted April 7, 2015 look in front of rear wheel at base of shock. is it leaking. common problem but pricy to buy. does the clutch have a bad wining noise. that's all I can remember to look at
Stealthblade Posted April 7, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) Bonus for a backrest. Choke should have a metal plate above / around it. All that oil, as mentioned is probably blow by, but needs to be cleaned up. Take care to not over fill the engine. Lose those tires and get new set. Dunlop E3's are an excellent tire, I just mounted a set and have noticed a difference in the handling. Make sure you check the rear shock boot for " any oil at all ". My Hagon cost $395, and even though I'm happy with it, I would have preferred to not replace it. Check the rear disc rotor. If there's a big lip on it, I just bought one for $138, so add that and $40 for the pads to the list. Some people use pads that are too hard ( not organic ) and they eat the rotor up. I went EBC rotor and EBC organic pads. Cosmetic note, pull and polish the underside of those mufflers, like my grandma always said :} Check back and tell us how it's running. Stealthblade Posted April 7, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 7, 2015 And, I can come look at it if you want. Madison is only a couple hours from me. Phone number is in my profile. Text me if this is an option. Bob
eagleeye Posted April 7, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) I just looked at Engleharts add, and this year/color is one of my favorites. As far as the oil, what was posted is more than likely the cause. I wouldn't worry about it. I'd have them clean it up though. Or, a can of engine degreaser and a hose will have them looking like new. And that battery charger will do nothing for a dead battery. Have them put a new battery in it. If you like, I'd meet you over there some day this week. I'm just up in Sauk City. BUT---Go to Madison CL and type in 2003 Yamaha Royal Star Venture. There is one in Neenah with 19,800 miles for around the same price. Edited April 7, 2015 by eagleeye
davitk Posted April 7, 2015 Author Share #7 Posted April 7, 2015 I'm getting the feeling someone hamfisted the choke and bent the linkage, the missing metal plate may have been functional to keep it positioned correctly? Was hoping to drive it today and listen to the clutch. There was some driveline noise first time I rode it, not much but didn't know what to listen for. Was also hoping to start it cold so that I could use the choke, the salesman had it started and conveniently warmed up for the first round. Second rate tires no doubt. However they are new-ish and the date codes make them less than two years old so they'd be hard to throw away. I'm currently riding an 87 Goldwing and burned through a set of Shinkos last season, installed Michelin Commander 2s in November and boy what a difference. I'll have to check the shock for oil, although from what I could see everything but the carbs looked squeaky clean. Does tupperware need to be removed to get a good visual? Thanks for the help and offers to check it out! You guys are all right, I don't care what the Goldwing Riders say about you.

davitk Posted April 7, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted April 7, 2015 To show up in person.... You don't get no better service than this! Indeed! Right now the ball is in the dealer's court as I wait for them to replace the battery and (hopefully) check the charging system. The bike is being sold as is so I doubt they'll put too much time into it.

Does tupperware need to be removed to get a good visual? You should be able to see the rear shock without removing anything. You'll need to get on your hands and knees to see it just in front of the rear tire. A flashlight may help but is not necessary. Engleharts has a pretty good tech who is familiar with the Venture which is not always the case with Yamaha dealers.

friesman Posted April 8, 2015 Share #12 Posted April 8, 2015 (edited) It looks identical to my 03. I would check the rear shock for oil around it as the rear shock is 400-700 bucks to replace depending on what you do. I wouldn't worry too much about the oil around the carbs as its probably from the P.O. using too much oil in the crankcase. the manual says to use too much oil, never let it get above halfway up the oil sight glass or it will suck oil up into your breathers and end up on carbs and intake area. Mine didn't have a plate above the choke until I put on Slowrolls polished StainlessSteelcarb cover Bling to dress it up It looks well taken care of, good luck with it if you decide to go ahead. davitk Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted April 9, 2015 ...and the front tire is awful, I could feel it slip during a fairly mild turn. When I parked it I ran my hand along the edge, it felt hard and waxy. The rear seemed OK. http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/IMG_20150408_172811655_zpsxihurotd.jpg

davitk Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #21 Posted April 9, 2015 The choke operates freely only to about half way closed. Occasionally the button will pull all the way out, not sure if something is bent or just sticking. http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa93/davitk/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04/IMG_20150408_165714314_zpss8ducw3p.jpg As for clutch basket whine, it is present at all speeds, most noticible while decelerating. It goes away completely with the clutch disengaged. I wouldn't classify it as annoying or irritating, but of course once I was listening for it was impossible to ignore. BlueSky Posted April 9, 2015 Share #23 Posted April 9, 2015 That price is about average retail according to nada. Take the photos of the issues you have noticed and try to bargain if you want it. It's a beautiful color but you are going to have to spend a few bucks on it or so it appears. There are better deals out there but maybe not the color you want. BlueSky Posted April 9, 2015 Share #24 Posted April 9, 2015 This one is priced a little higher with lower miles and may be worth a few bucks more. http://appleton.craigslist.org/mcy/4966025830.html
