jneed53 Posted March 27, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2008 Well, it took about 3000 miles, but the Metzler 880 on the back finally started blowing chunks. It stranded me on m way to work this morning at 6:15 AM in the dark. Thankfully, a police officer equipped me with flares while I waited for AAA to show up and scoop the scoot off the road. The dealer only had the same tire in stock. I was in a bit of a rush and had him put it on. Metzler is referring me back to the place I bought for any warranty adjustment and said the Yamaha dealer should have taken care of it. Mine was made in Germany, not Brazil, so I figured I was to be spared the agony of the defects. Will keep you posted.
Tom Posted March 27, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 27, 2008 Mine took 1700 miles...Metz was gonna replace them but NO WAY with all the write ups on them would I have them on my bike.I just chalked it up to a BAD experience and put Avons back on.When you come down ride mine with the Avons, you will be pleased. 1BigDog Posted March 27, 2008 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2008 because it will be asked...what pressure did you have it inflated to? You know Gib?? Thatrs what Metzeler asked me when I sent in pics of the first tire that blew a chunk of rubber. When I told them I ran 45 lbs it suddenly became tire abuse by me. When the third set tossed rubber too I said enough is enough. There are way too many instances of Metz tires throwing rubber. Offering to replace them with the same tire is not a cure. They just dont want to acknowledge that a problem exists. A tire should not lose rubber just because tire pressure may be a few pounds too low. Wear badly, yes, but not lose rubber unless its so low that you are sliding. I sure wish I had saved those e-mails from Metzeler.
RPG Posted March 27, 2008 Share #5 Posted March 27, 2008 Hopefully Metzler gets the problem fixed. I had a set a couple years ago and was very pleased with them. I got around 12000 KM's on them before they (primarily the rear)required changing. I replaced them with Avons, but only to try something different. I actually preferred the ride and handling a little more with the Metzlers, but the Avons last longer and can carry more weight safely, so their a bit better suited to my riding requirements. Billet Posted March 27, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 27, 2008 Put a new set of Metzlers on the old 1100 Vstar last year. When I picked up the wheels the rear had 5 1/2 ounces of lead on it (even on the same side as the valve, tube type). I called Metzler and all they said was "take it back" After I convinced the dealer to exchange it the replacement "only" took 2 1/2 oz. Just got Avon's for the Venture!! loehring Posted March 28, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 28, 2008 I have been running ME880s for 2 years and no problems at all. Has anyone with a 1st Gen had an issue? It seems like it's in the wider RSV tires. The new rear I just put on is an updated tire that is sized with letters and not numbers. The 140/90 that I was running before had a max of 50psi and I ran it at 48. The new one has a max of 40psi and I'm running 38. I keep hearing all this bad but I've had great service fom all my tires. loehring Posted March 28, 2008 Share #9 Posted March 28, 2008 Just to add, the fitment chart on the Metzler site listed tire pressure of 38 front and 46 rear for the old 50 max psi tires. That's for the 1st Gen size. That's what I always ran within a couple pounds.

It might be tire abuse by you. Have them buy you a set of Avons.
Tartan Terror Posted March 28, 2008 Share #12 Posted March 28, 2008 Some people swear by the Metzlers yet even the newer ones keep having the same exact defect. You would at least think they would fix the problem or pull the tire from the market so people dont get hurt. I use the Avon for this reason. I just wished I had saved those back and forth e-mails from them. It certainly was not an issue that they wanted to address.

1sttenor Posted March 28, 2008 Share #15 Posted March 28, 2008 I'm just glad I asked you guys before I bought. Just the thought of chunking was enough to keep me off of them.

Now someone ask me again why I will never buy a Metzeler... And to top off that wonderful experience, you even get the pleasure of getting stranded and having to pay even more money for a tow. Sure glad nothing worse happened!. Me, I would absolutely walk before I would give that company even 1 cent for a tire - just not worth the risk to me, my bike, and others, nor the aggravation of dealing with such a terrible company. You can get new tires from Southwest Moto in about 3 days (standard shipping - free when you buy two). If you decide to order a decent skin, give me a shout - I'll show you how to mount it on my tire machine. And that offer goes for anyone else that wants to come over to my place in the DFW area - happy to help anyone out, as long as they are not mounting a Metzeler (just not worth the liability risk to me to be connected in any way with one of them). wizard Posted March 28, 2008 Share #18 Posted March 28, 2008 I love the Metzlers! Handle great, get good milage on them, and never had a problem with them. I did pick up a roofing nail once in the front tire, but I plugged it and went many happy miles on it. When this rear tire is worn, I'll probably replace it with another Metzler. I did not like the way the Avons wore or handled. I saw where Oldman mounted a car tire to his bike. I may go that route next time.
