Godlover Posted March 22, 2015 #1 Posted March 22, 2015 I'm beginning to wonder if my project 83 is running on 3 cylinders. It runs fine but once in awhile it will kick in like it is turbo charged. Is that a good possibility or could it be the carbs need synced. Just wondering.......
bongobobny Posted March 23, 2015 #2 Posted March 23, 2015 May be a bad plug or plug wire, or an intermittent coil...
flyday58 Posted March 23, 2015 #3 Posted March 23, 2015 Timely post. Discovered mine is running on three cylinders. I think it's the plug wire, specifically the cap. Richard
Vonwolf Posted March 23, 2015 #5 Posted March 23, 2015 I have the same problem I identified the cylinder that was out with an infrared thermometer, I pulled the plug, put it in the boot, grounded it out and started the motor unintentionally. I only wanted to kick it over to see if I got spark, but it fired right up and shocked the hell out of me no matter where I held the plug wire I got zapped. I'm guessing I'm getting a little of the spark bleeding through the wire so it looks like it's time for new wires and boots.
Godlover Posted March 23, 2015 Author #6 Posted March 23, 2015 Where does one find new wires for the first generation? I'd be willing to do the same...
dna9656 Posted March 23, 2015 #7 Posted March 23, 2015 I got new standard automotive ignition wire at the local NAPA by the foot.
Marcarl Posted March 23, 2015 #8 Posted March 23, 2015 Where does one find new wires for the first generation? I'd be willing to do the same... I get mine at the local Yammi dealer,,, just get a length and cut to measure. I think I got about 8ft last time,,, it's cheap. Needs to be the wire kind, not the carbon kind.
Godlover Posted March 23, 2015 Author #9 Posted March 23, 2015 I can probably just go to Napa here in town and get some.
Marcarl Posted March 23, 2015 #10 Posted March 23, 2015 Although it is easier to get at by taking the faring off, the change can be done with the faring on, if your hands are small enough, and you don't cuss a lot. In the process watch out for the ribber o-rings at the coil end, they tend to go for a trip to who knows where, and magnets won't find them. The coils can be reached from the front. Each coil is in position as to the cylinder it belongs to, so right is right, front is front and back is back. Reach up under the faring at the front and undo the front wire and remove, that is the easy one,,,, a little further behind is the back coil for the back cylinder. This one is the PITA but can be done and wants to be done first. Run the wire into place, slide the nut onto the wire, then slide the o-ring onto the wire, now pull the wire back a bit so that the end can be inserted into the coil, insert the wire, push for all you are worth so that it seats well into the coil and then spin on a tighten the nut,,,,, good luck! A pair of long reach needle nose pliers comes in handy if you have them.

What's happening is one carb is not contributing at idle thru about 2500rpm, then the secondary circuits start working resulting in the surge of power. Try the Seafoam method first. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
