MasterGuns Posted March 21, 2015 #1 Posted March 21, 2015 I purchased a LED bulb to replace the standard bulb in my 86. The rear of the bulb will protrude much further back into the fairing than the OEM bulb and assuming I am confident it will physically fit, exactly how must I jumper the CMS to keep the "Headlight" warnings from illuminating. The LED bulb is so much brighter than stock and should be a drastic improvement. I've searched on here but was not able to locate any threads that could help. thanks in advance for assistance anyone will provide.
dingy Posted March 21, 2015 #2 Posted March 21, 2015 Picture with text on it points out terminals that need jumpered together for each function. Picture of jumpers on show high & low beams bypassed. Pictures are of a 1986-1993 CMU. Gary
frankd Posted March 22, 2015 #3 Posted March 22, 2015 In addition to Dingy's modification of the CMU, you need to dis-able the headlight module to turn out the white light and allow the LED to switch from Low beam to High beam. Here's how I did it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/first-generation-venture-tech-talk/92344-installed-led-headlight-kit-89-a.html?highlight=frankd
MasterGuns Posted March 22, 2015 Author #4 Posted March 22, 2015 Frank, I checked the kit you bought from Cycle Gear and that bulb is very similar in size to the kit I purchased from Advmonster.com. I have two questions if you don't mind. Was there sufficient room for the longer bulb and 2) does the bulb dispense the heat it generates especially being in such a confined space? I have no idea how hot the rear of the bulb get and am concerned it may get so hot that it could melt other wires if it were to come in contact with them. regards
dna9656 Posted March 22, 2015 #5 Posted March 22, 2015 Hey Gunny! So far as I know LEDs don't make any heat, maybe these do I donno. I sure would like to know how to jumper the 83 to 85 CMU for this and the rest of the LEDs in the running/tail/blinker apps. Maybe in this app the CMUs are the same?
frankd Posted March 23, 2015 #6 Posted March 23, 2015 Herb, You probably know by now, but yes, the LED will fit, and mine has a fan built in to it that cools the LED. Doug, I think that 84 and later CMU's are similiar, but 83's are way different. LEDs do make some heat, but no where near as much as an incandescent bulb. Frank
